Ok thanks, don't think my budget will allow for a 80 or 100 series though, so looks like a lowish milage Colarado will need to suffice for now, are these uber reliable as well?

So is the Hilux the better of the two then, I'm going to be looking for a fairly cheap tow car soon I'm trying to narrow down my options, was thinking about a 2800 Shogun as well.
Cheers Hodgy, what do you mean RR though, I was thinking Range Rover but it dosent make much sense llol

Land Rover dealers in Africa use Landcruiser as recovery trucks LOL
I have posted about these beasts lots of times before on this forum (search)
a good source of info is http://www.tlocuk.co.uk/
what makes the 80 series so legendary is, in UK trim, it has the ability to lock all three axles (diff locks in centre, front and rear)

Been watching a few of these you tube clips now, the TLC seems to be quite a bit of kit, strong as **** and uber reliable even with high milage going by what I can make out, sounds just the ticket for my tow car.

The 100 has a different front suspension arrangement (better on road manners)
they do do a 105 series which has the 80 running gear and the 100 body -- this is mainly for the UN and NGO's

I often see LCs towing greasy spoon mobile snack bars, funfair caravans, etc. Old Shoguns are more pikey but LCs have that pikey factor too.
Drove the grandparents-inlaws one this weekend (bought it a year old - 54 reg, VX 4.2TD) - definitely comfortable and it's been pretty reliable (but not faultless) now it's on 90k miles but still not my cup of tea. They are replacing it this year with either a new LC or more likely a Disco 4 with the pokey diesel unit.
Don't forget - the inlaws had THREE in a row from new (one older shape, two the newer but not current shape) which I drove a lot so know them well. I still really like the classic shaped one - did a fair few miles in NZ in one.

1.2 tonnes will be over many 4x4s tow limits if unbraked.
Hey you can't do this in those pikey LCs
One 8ft, one 6ft surfboard in the roof hanging on straps tied to the grab handles. Well handy and of course, dead cool
