There's no denying Block has exceptional car control. Best driver? No. Who is/was, is not as simple as it sounds. Most replies, my earlier one included, focus on rallying but, as BtK stated above, there's other disciplines; F1, NASCAR, V8 Supercars to name a few. So, from F1, top of the shop, IMO, would be Aryton Senna (Schuey would be a distant second); from NASCAR, no idea; from V8 Supercars, Peter Brock (most Aussies would say so), Craig Lowndes, Jamie Whincup maybe. But what about events like Paris-Dakar (wherever it is held)? Sainz would be up there.
There's this [URL="http://www.raceofchampions.com/index.aspx"]Race of Champions/URL]
So, SNetters, if there could be a cast list of past (deceased or retired) and present, for a tournament such as this, who would you pick? Mine?
F1 - Senna/Vettel
WRC - Kankunnen/Loeb
V8 - Brock/Whincup
P-D - ?/Sainz
NASCAR - Fitipaldi/Franchetti (only names I know)
And don't forget British and World touring cars, Group C cars and others I've forgot

I can see Whincup at least having a test at F1 level at some point, he is a very good natural driver and manages to squeeze a couple of extra seconds a lap out of the V8's.

But I prefer to watch Lowndes, the Mansell of the V8 Supercars, huge bollox

@FM
Ambrose has gone on to do well in NASCAR, I believe.
You still in OZ or back in the MotherLand?

That should give you a clue

At least motors TV gives me my fix, Abu Dhabi was Live but I think Clipsal will be screened a week after the event, which is poor as I have to avoid the V8Supercars site for a week, at least the NRL gets back underway this weekend, not that you would care being in WA

Nothing in the thread yet that I can see for Le Mans sports-car class stuff, so a well deserved mention has to go to:
Jacky Ickx
Mark Donohue
Derek Bell

Edit: Just saw that markr did mention Group-C, so those are definitely the names I'd think of here
