It is a bit like mobiles were int he late eighties/early nineties, an Ipad is an expensive, aspirational device and there are those that like to be seen using one but there are also those that dont have one that get irrationally offended by someone else using one, round the pool on holiday I would say is an ideal tiome to use one but perhaps walking down the street is not as a rule. I got shouted at and called a ****** in about 91 as I had a phone and went outside to use it, a group of girls were jeering ****** at me and making phone gestures, weird people that feel the need to say something just because someone has something they dont.

Tablet/Slate devices will statuate the market this year, mainly due to the Ipad and the others playing catch up, also because the technology to allow tablet pc's in terms of O/S, screen and battery is there now, I have an Archos 70, seems to do the job and is smaller than an Ipad.

I had my first mobile in 1988 (works phone) and made a point of not using it in public unless i needed to - then never displaying it or using in a look at me fashion, still do not do so now. it is a tool for me and not an icon or a must have and/or fashion accessory. I certainly do not walk down the street with my phone thrust out in front of me stabbing the screen and yelling "no i said a red Ferrari" either in a Dom Jolley-a-like way

I agree partially with that, but as the owner of an iPad I would not walk about on a high street using it lol.
A smaller device, arches, playbook, galaxy tab, a bit more like it, but still not sure I would happily use it walking about. The explanation of GPS would make sense I guess.

Yes i am a bit of a dinosaur,just don't get them.

Had a play on peoples i phones and all they want to show me are games or how they can turn the screen and a picture rights itself

Yes I'm probably classed as sad but I can't see how my life would improve by having one

I have seen plenty of iCocks (thanks for inventing a very suitable term for them, WWSD) on trains with their iPads, cocking about with it something chronic, looking dead impersonal and dead important Specially the young student types. I can't imagine them affording one themselves TBH. Their mummies and daddies must have paid for them.

Its a little hard for the iPad users not to seem like they are making a "look a me" statement due to the bloody size of the thing!

But why is using an iPad on the street any different to using an iPhone, or any other phone on the street for that matter?

It will become common place within a few years, even your granny will be using one!

I agree with the fact that it takes time for people to get used to seeing people with iPads. There will be more and more to see, day by day. But for some, even using iPhone or any phone excessively in public is odd. People should look around, gain visual stimulation and atmospheric knowledge in "here and now" sense, as its very good for personal development. People that always stick to their gadgets, communicating to far off people on such devices, or even always listening to their iPod in their own little world are dissociated with the surrounding, which is unhealthy IMO. Teenagers do it, which is understandable (if not right), due to their "age" syndrome. But there is a chance that "the 18+ doing it till 50+ ones" may lose touch with the reality around them to some extent (if not all), the plot thickens. Dissociation may become second nature of the society, but then again, people will get used to it, like any other thing, I suppose.

i-sad if you are down the gym.

Lots of people down mine have mp3 players, but one regular has started turning up with an ipad (seemingly for music and vids). He's on a treadmill pounding away with the ipad in front of him where the controls are, watching something.

The massive vibration from runnning suddenly jolts the ipad off the machine onto the treadmill and exited about 15mph backwards. Promptly followed by the bloke as he was attached to it via the head phones (looked like it took him off balance).

I was a little way behind on a rower and didn't know whether to laugh or help. He did get up quickly - so laugh it is then :-)

I am sure that 20 or so years ago people felt the same way about mobile phone users but the thing is the iPad is considerably bigger and after all do you really need to use one wilst literally on the move.

I am sure the same can be said of all tablets pc and macs.
Just stupid IMO, just takes a few chavs to run past them and grab it and it's gone, I have no issue with someone using them in starbucks or whereever not that I would do it personally, but to walk down the street waving it about is just plain stupid

I find it quite funny that people on a Subaru forum, not known for being discrete in appearance or sound are calling iPad owners ***** for being showy.

Funny you should say that

He could have given to EJ and quietened him down for a minute or two.
