Haha, I have a lot to thank him for to be honest. Because if he hadnt have taken me out in his car, i would probably have thought mine was ok... I wouldnt fancy the pulley coming off while i was driving it.

Hes getting scared now cause he knows when mine is timed up properly ill give him a run for his money... thats why he wants my FMIC haha. Im only joking Mark

Rob84 - Pics of the classic tool would be great, measurements even better Im sure it wouldnt be too hard to make something up.

lol i am a vulture hahaha i gave him a brand new maf and my BCS for freeeeeeeeeeee lol, i'll help anyone me i am that kinda guy the wife moans cus she gets nothing lol, going up tomorrow to steal his springs his downpipe and the fmic when he puts the kettle on, as for a good run for my money lol we know your's has a print out @280bhp m8 i bet ur's will be quicker cus i am fatter than you lol,

if the bottom pulley is cutting into the cover have yo checked for crank end float to much movement play in the thrust bearings????? engine build....../ refresh

Haha dont worry mate, we cant all be as slim and athletic as me lmao and anyway the syncro on my 2nd gear is iffy, so youll have a good head start lol.

As for the BCS, it was sitting in your bay lonely and unloved... we cant all be flash gits with an Apexi AVCR you know haha But yeah i do owe you a drink of my finest tea at least

i have a 1996 sti and the pulley on mine looks like its wobbling very slightly tried to tighten it but it was tight so im guessing i should take it off and check this key way

p.s its not near the cover or anything just looks like its unbalanced if that makes sense


should i be concerned or am i being paranoid??? as it looks fine when its not idling

Gates make belts for 95% of manufacturers

I never time up using the pulley to pulley marks, I use them for referrence only. Best way is with a new belt (£35ish from GGR) and use the white marks to assist fitting. If you can, find a peice of aluminium plate that slots into the groove of the belt covers and align with marks on pulleys using the plate as an extension of the cover groove as with the engine in the car, the exhaust cams are a right tw#8t to do. Refer to pulley to pulley marks to tripple check after white marks, pulley to cover (All the white marks never line up perfect but there is definately a closer match one way than the other).

Start at the crank shaft and work anti-clockwise with the tension pulley removed.

I even made a hair clip type thing out of a bucket handle that slotted over the timing belt and into the crankshaft pulley to stop the belt jumping off while findling about.

The driver side cams are off cam at TDC but the passenger side cams are both on cam and tend to move right at the critical point but I find using the method above makes it relatively easy.

Mine wobbles, my mates wobbles too.

The pulleys on the crankshaft tend to look like they wobbles as well

There was no serious wobble that i could see on mine. Just be aware, if you do take it off now and you find that the keyway and crank/alt pulley are knackared you will not be able to use the car untill its sorted out. But i would check before it gets any worse. Id take pics but my camera is crap.

You can see on this pic, just how bad it has damaged the alt/crank pulley.

Ohh nice, i thought about bonnet raisers myself. I had them on my old car though and people kept trying to close the bonnet lol.

Walbro is a piece of **** to fit, hardest bit is putting the clip on the filter bag lol took me ages.

Quick update while i have the chance.

Ive removed cam pulley, and the old key. See pic below of the damage.

Damage to the crank isnt as bad as i was expecting, im sure a few spot welds will sort it. Im picking up a new crank/alt pulley and cam pulley of mattybr5 tommorrow, and i am also going to replace the front crank seal while i can get to it.

Shocked to find that 2 of the oil pump bolts were loose, i could actually undo them with my fingers, So i am glad i found all this when i did or it could have been a lot worse.

Cheers Rob, they look to big for the Classic pulleys. Do you have some sort of adapter that sits on the pulley bolts and then the tool locks on to them.

Didn't think they would be generally available.

Those pictures are fairly large to be fair, so they look like they dont fit but they do lol
They just slot into the inside of the cam pulleys, not bolts needed to secure them on.

Those locking tools have the prefix SP on the part numbers, there's a good chance there made by Sykes Pickavent in this country as they make most locking tools for any manufacturer, might be worth contacting them direct.

My pulleys are currently locked with cable ties and a G-Clamp. Seems to be holding so far.
