Dunno whether Police are booking folk for this or not. Having said that, I think peeps are daft for not clearing large blobs of snow from their roofs or bonnets! Agree with Bravo etc.

........and another thing - was tailgaited today by some egit. Some idiot driving a few feet behind me! Pulled over and let him by, then watched him do the same to the next driver!
(Apologies to my gf for the expletives I used!).

1. As far as I'm aware, the word MUST in a set of rules or guidelines indicates something which HAS to be done i.e. expect penalties if you don't do it and an accident happens.
2. Ignorance of the law is no defence.

I would feel just the same B2Zero. Can't believe how people feel they have to tailgate at any time let alone on snow. Thats the sort of thing that deserves the points!

Saw the opposite today, a bint in a rangie refusing to pull over for a ambulance. Eventually he was in his horn as well as sirens. After a 1/4 mike of straight road, she finally pulled over on a sharp right corner, just before a traffic island!

I heard that theres no standard points or penalty for it but could be considered as dangerous driving by the law.
How the hell can they expect bus and lorry drivers to get snow from their roofs?
I will now be hunting for police cars with snow on their roofs and get a picture

I agree, it's not the law. But everyone ought to read it and abide by it. If they did there would be far less of the dangerous "every man for himself" attitude that prevails nowadays.

Not Strathclyde then
It's a bit odd. I've heard enough to say it's a hoax e-mail, acutal cops saying it's not true etc...but quite a few folk are saying their mates etc have been done?
I'm wondering if it's been non traffic officers doing it

Don't care.....I clean my car so won't be happening to me

Personally I think that anyone that can't be arsed to clean the snow off their car before setting off not only deserves three points and a fine but deserves a ban.

A casual disregard for even the common sense basics of winter motoring deserves nothing less.

I wonder how many accidents are caused, directly or indirectly, by these morons ?

Snow flies off their car and hits the car behind either obscuring the other drivers vision or causing 'panic' braking when it hits the screen or covers their own windows so they can't see a f**king thing !

Really easy, get your a**e out of bed 10 minutes earlier when there is a chance of snow, start the car and set the heater to 'full' and 'demist' position, run it at a fast tickover for five minutes or so, sweep off the snow with a soft bristled long handled brush !

Rocket science eh ?

in snowy conditions you drive slower than normal... yes? you also leave a larger gap between you and the car in front....yes?

so if you werent tail gating then you would'nt get hit by the snow off the car in front. in snowy conditions i dnt drive fast enough for the snow to FLY off.

but on the other hand if the snow is piled on your roof it is common sence to brush it off although a brush would'nt be the tool of my choice

What makes you think that snow flying off will only hit the car behind you? what about it hitting people walking at the side of the road? Oh and for the record I've seen loads of snow flying off cars and trucks today down the motorway.

So the people with snow on their car roof don't then sometimes drive on motorways that aren't covered in snow ?

You don't need to be tailgating to get taken out by an 'avalanche' from one of the 'it's only snow on the roof ffs' brigade !

I just think it's lazy and inconsiderate to other road users but what the hell do me and the highway code know anyway ?

Whats the point of arguning the toss as to whether or not you can get points and a fine for the sake of a few seconds to remove the snow from the roof of your car ? I just use a wide broom and push/drag it off, it is in your interest to move it as apart from the safety angle it avoids having a lump of rock hard permafrost on top of your pride and joy, move it while its nice and soft. Its like some decide that because they are told, they wont do it as they dont like common sense dictating to them and want to get into a confrontation with a copper about it, its in your interest not to have a huge blob of snow slide down your windscreen, at the very least you will have to get out and clear it, depends of course whether you want to round the splines off your wiper arms or burn out the motor.

I keep my car clear of snow if I can, when it stops I nip out and clear it as best I can, say you have an emergency at home, one of the kids injures themselves and you need to get to hospital ? ok if its totally covered but a few inches you may as well keep it clear, including the roof.

I dont understand those that clear a small porthole through frost either, then drive off, just get up earlier ffs, you are driving something that can kill somebody and you cant see properly ?

I too don't understand why people are quibbling about the importance of this. I do understand that we're not used to large snowfalls in this country and it's true that pitfalls are not always obvious to the inexperienced. I suffered the very hazard that people are describing, a couple of days ago - a large sheet of snow from my roof slid down onto my windscreen. Luckily, I was travelling very slowly, there was hardly any traffic and my wipers were sufficient to shift the bulk of it straight away, although my wipers stuck because they couldn't go far enough down to reach the return point of their cycle owing to the large mass of snow. I had to pull in straight away and clear everything away. I count myself as a conscientious motorist, yet I didn't spot the hazard.

Well I saw it on the news camera man out with traffic plod doing the rounds and stopping people for it, also the coppers were checking car tyres to make sure they didnt have road legal slicks on, dont know what they would have done if the cars did though as they are still legal.

Wether the police are doing people or not this thread has made me more conscious about clearing the car properly. In all honesty I hadn't thought about the potential hazrds it could cause and now spend an extra few minutes clearing all the snow off.
