Well the police say it's not true, they will pull you if you haven't cleaned all your windows. They can't enforce it on everyone, like van and lorry drivers.

Happened here today in eastkilbride my mate go stopped 3 points £60 fine told its dangerous to drive without clearing the snow off the roof first

I agree, it is dangerous and it should carry 3 points and a £60 fine. Two different Officers have said it's not an offence, though I don't doubt some have been pulled for it. I would ring the police station if I were your friends.

It is dangerous, I can confirm that. I failed to clear mine yesterday as it was frozen solid. I braked slightly about 30 mins into my drive and the whole lot slid forward onto my screen. Luckily I was doing about 5 mph and there was a side road a few metres down the road.

Couldnt see a bloody thing and lesson learned! Its a good thing IMO if its true.

Obviously things like not having your windscreen defrosted is.

It's all over facebook, twitter and Avforums and I dare say every other car forum. Not to mention texts and emails. My girlfriends work is next door to a police station, and one of the therapists, went and asked after getting worried. They said you can drive with as much snow as you like as long as it doesn't obstruct your view or your lights/indicators etc. Also a friends dad is an officer, there are a few police on here that could clear it up.

My wipers were on and they very nearly broke due to the weight. I'm talking about 3" of heavy snow the length of the wagon roof coming down onto the screen in one go. Not good!

As I said, lesson learned.

if it gets 60% of them to clear their roofs Im all for it, nothing worse then hitting a sheet of show thats frozen over a few days at 30mph

ive just checked the AA site cant find anything to do with it? its just says in there guide to clean it off cos it could slide down and obstruct view. it say's nothing about 3 points and 60 quid fine

Maybe they should remind people not just to clear the front window, but the rear one and the side windows as well, as is clearing the headlights and the brake lights.
Did make me laugh how may cars had forgetten this simple thing this morning .

Well funny enough the local plod were on the local news two nights ago up here saying quite the opposite.

There was a bloke behind me this morning, who'd obviously just got in the car and turned the wipers on. That was the only bit without snow on.

He'd opened the side window and was trying to flick the snow off his mirror whilst he was going along.

I would say while there is no specific offence of "driving wit excess snow on your roof", the offence would be covered by an umbrella offence relating to driving a vehicle in poor condition for the roads. If there is good reason, expect a ticket. And quite frankly as bravo says, it's common sense to clear the snow off your car. Annoys the hell out of me, the number of people that just clear little holes to see thru

Richie not saying your mates full of crap but it was on North Tonight (last night), two Traffic coppers doing the rounds pulling drivers for having snow on the roof, I will check the website to see if there is anything about it still available.

Can't see as this is a bad thing really. People driving around in snow covered cars because they can't be bothered to clear it off are idiots in my opinion.

I once used the wipers years ago to help clear the snow off my car, and it burnt the wiper motor out. So not recommended.

its bollocks they cant do that as you can see through the windows and its not in the way of your vision or driveability next you will be saying theyre giving you points for driving in the rain behave and if you have been stopped for it take them to court as there is no proof of it being a law or inforcing it i drove with snow on my roof today as long as its not on your windows and your vision is fine then i dont see a problem with it

It was an odd Orange multi media message that arrived in my inbox. Probably bollox, but has that ring of authenticity to it, particularly if people know people who have actually been busted and given points. Not sure?!?
