To be perfectly honest as much as I like the P1 & 2005 JDM STI I couldn't get a good one for £8k so I'd rather have a minty ltd edition classic for that money than a bug or blob I just prefer the way classics drive to be honest

Arrow S1 Rs Turbo £25k

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2256010.htm

how about this, a 17k series 1 for £25000 i mentioned it to a mate of mine who owns a minty mint 30k series 1 and laughed at the price, he advised me that the owner of that car paid £18000 for it within the last couple of years which proves there is always someone out there who will pay the premium for a car in outstanding condition. crazy really but the rb5 owner is clutcing at straws in this current climate

Thing is though, some cars will just keep on appreciating.

About 4 years ago I seriously considered a Lancia Integrale. Drove a few and £7K would get me into a decent one. I actually didn't like drive very much compared to a classic Impreza so I opted for another Impreza.

Big mistake. Lost money on the Scoob (as you do) and the Integrale value has doubled.

I'm sure mint standard classics will appreciate but its going to take time. Fuel going up, insurance going up, VAT going up. Its makes performance cars look like such a bad move.

Best example, Escos, prices hit rock bottom, thrashed & bad examples are gone or disappearing, mint examples command a premium with ltd editions such as Monte's even more so, now the classic impreza will eventually go the same way!!!

You have no idea do you?
To start with, a good low mileage MY93 jdm wrx will still only fetch a couple of hundred quid over a high miler.
Limited editions (as i have already stated) go for about 10-20% more, not 100% more, and no, a good low mileage turbo wont hold its value, even 5 years down the line as the newer cars will become more desireable (and be more reliable).
Am I talking out me ****? well I have a nice low mileage V5 STI type R (lower than that rb5 by a good 13k ) been in the uk since new etc, and its not worth what that rb5 is up for (neither is that RB5) and its a more desireable model (plus ive owned 4 scoobs to date, 2 classics and 2 newage over the last 10 years).

Similar "icon" cars are commanding a higher price these days. A minty mint 205GTi has a higher asking price than an MY00 Impreza. Golfs are higher again but thats more scene tax than anything else - the same should happen with classics.

I'm not saying they'll be in a similar price range as the Integrale but when the **** boxes finally fade away the classic prices should go up a bit and then hold their value.

The problem here is that your audience becomes very limited. I'd love a type R like yours Tony but it would be a shame IMO to use it as a daily. Sadly I don't have time for a 2nd car so if I get another scoob its going to have to be new enough to cope reliably with day to day use - MY05 STI.

Thats because youve been a scoob before i just mean like I said previously general buyers. Its abit like when anyone buys a new car you want to try and get the most for your money so you typically buy the newest car you can "in general". Im not saying its the best car "classic vs newage" but im saying most general buyers not enthusiast buy the newest which doesnt always mean best in whoever's eyes.
When I brought my car at the beginning of this year I wasnt a fan of the classic never been in or driven one, but over the time Ive been on this forum and seen how some of them are in prestine condition far better than my car If I could afford a second scoob I would definately have one.

I know what your saying Ed just have to remember that the turbo 2000, WRX and standard classic STI's wont be the cars that hold their value, its like saying the 205 rallye is more desireable than a 205 GTI, and its not, the 1.9 GTI is the most desirable because it was the top of the range car, the wrx, turbo and STI's were not, so those will continue to depreciate.
Now on the other hand, the 22B will retain its value, and the Type R/P1 will hold its value better (though still depreciate), because these are the most sought after cars.
As I said before, limited editions hold 10-20% above market price for a UK car, those also go down in price, even low mileage examples.

The BIG point is, you cannot compare a mid range car against what a top range car in another marque (the Escort Cossie was mentioned, what about the RS2000 of the same shape? worthless now...).

its all about what someone is willing to pay !! if someones after a mint rb5 then someone might be willing to pay the price !! not everyone is looking for a bottom dollar bargain!! look at the prices of escort cosies ,lancia deltas, etc surely the limited edition scoobies should increase in value in time like all the other rally focused classics !!

Read my post above especially about which do hold their value better and which ones will still drop in price.

Tony

PS, 10 years ago they were all saying the same thing about classics holding their value and being worth a fortune 10 years down the line, yup 2.5k, total fortune

i disagree, i think that a totally standard immaculate uk turbo will be worth more in a few years time. imprezas are in the same boat as the sierra cosworths years ago, i remember them going for 2500 back then, now even tatty ones are around 5 grand. and mint ones are 8k plus. will take a few years, maybe another 10 years, but i think that will be the case. only time will tell.

I'd say the Impreza Sports are the Impreza version of the 205 Rallye. Its still a cool car but just not quite there

I would class the UK turbo in the same vane as the GTI. 205 prices don't seem to vary according to 1.6 or 1.9, they seem mostly on condition.

Certain Impreza limited editions command better prices than others - Catalunya's seem a bit more than normal, Terzo's seem to be the least wanted and RB5s the most wanted of the limited and each ones value is a bit more than standard.

I'm sure good quality classics - no matter version - will appreciate in time. Perhaps its starting now and these arguments over price are the growing pains of the appreciation process?

They wont, thats the point, the the cossies were top of the range, uk turbo's are not top of the range, they are mid range, and mid range doesnt hold its value
The top ones that will hold their value are the 22B's, the next are the type R/P1's, new age will be different again the rest will drop in price.
