weird..it works with other OS and not win98SE?..

Silly question but have you applied winsock 2 on the said PC's?

we had a novell network where the clients would not bring up login screens at start up..winsock sorted that problem out.

just a thought

Another thought.

Where did the network card driver come from. Is it part of the Win98Se kit. Is there a more uptodate driver on the net ??

Hosts files:

I agree I don't see the point either but it would be interesting to prove whether this is a machine or a network fault. If it has no effect then I think you have a DNS/WINS problem IMHO . Talking of which - and I am typing as I think - have you tried deleting and recreating the DNS/WINS database?

What sort of switches are you using?

Good luck again

It may be the speed of login, the exact order the interface is bought up (which triggers the swicth port to do spanning tree) and the domain is looked for.

At the very least I would tie a dhcp IP address to one PC, then ping that address as the PC boots. That will give an indication of whether the IP address is allocated before or after it attempts to find its domain.

Nowt to do with routers. What Network are you plugged into - Hubs, Switches ?.

If you havent changed anything maybe someonelse has ? Do you look after the swicthes etc ?

Iain, is answer to your question, no error reported, also servers are replicating fine.

Miles > not any closer yet, we can re-create the problem. I believe something to do with the TCP/IP Stack.

Basically, did a fresh install of win98SE on piii800 and the piii450. Installed networking (TCP/IP, Microsoft Net...)/put in domain to use etc. Restarted machine, logged in fine, LOGON: PASSWORD: DOMAIN: logon box also!

Selected log off user, then logged back on, still working fine. Restarted the computer, and then the problem came back again. Just LOGON: PASSWORD: box.

Installed netbui, restarted, LOGON: PASSWORD: DOMAIN: shows up. Can use the network fine.

I have made TCP/IP the primary protocol, however this is only a short term fix, as I don't want netbui going around the network!

All other machines are still not effect and can do everything fine, and they do not have netbui installed.

So to sum this up... seems like a problem with the tcp/ip stack. AS when the machine restarts it looses the DOMAIN: part, however when you have logged on locally, and try and do something using the network, it then must initialize the tcp/ip and a LOGON: PASSSWORD: DOMAIN: Appears!

Bizarre eh! So if anyone has any other ideas please let me know!
