Hahaha, can't see my collection ever growing to that size. Have around 27GB at the moment!

Soo, wtf is a caddy and how do I go about making it work with a 'bare drive'? Any other stuff to know or do these just work without any installation of drivers etc?

 

buy a usb caddy for 3.5inch drive. make sure it is a SATA caddy not IDE. undo the screws in the back plate, slide out the frame in which the bare drive will be screwed into. screw the drive into the frame. slide the drive in its frame back into the caddy. the back plate will have the power supply switch and the power and SATA connector for the drive. the connectors cannot be put on the wrong way. just connect them up. screw the back plate of the caddy back into place. most caddys will have a small extermal power supply. plug it in connect the USB cable to your computer and it should see the 2TB drive. you will need to use Windows disk management to format the drive first time. please note that 2TB is an advertised "unformatted" capacity. when you format the drive will only be about 1.8TB.

no drivers needed as windows just sees the drive as a big usb pen drive. i would recommend switching them off when they are not in use as the small fans in the back of the caddy can be a bit noisy.

I added it to basket, went to checkout, it automatically added £7.95 delivery but said more delivery options would be available after logging in. I went to the hassle of creating an account, but that only gave me another option of £15 for Saturday delivery.

At £68 including delivery it's only £1 cheaper than ebuyer unfortunately.

 

ok guys. on overclockers this morning and they are taking pre orders for the new Western Digital 3TB green drive. only 5400rpm though. also saw a nice 480GB SSD at nearly £900

OCZ have a 960GB version of this drive as well.

 

I couldn't see a release date for the 3TB drive though. Hopefully when it's released they should reduce the price of the 2Tb disks.
