You guys know how I like my storage.

Well heads up. EBuyer are doing 2TB Western Digital drives for £70 with free P+P.

Tidgy 29 October 2010 12:21 PM

fookin hell, are SSD's coming down in price yet?

Tidgy 29 October 2010 12:29 PM

mmm, £150 for 90gb, now that is tempting

bigsinky 29 October 2010 12:30 PM

the slower drives (125MB/sec) are coming down in price but the fast drives (280MB/sec) are still on the pricy side. new 240GB IBIS drive (720MB/sec) is around 600 odd quid.

Tidgy 29 October 2010 12:32 PM

yeah, just been looking, that 90gb one i linked is 285m/s

seriously tempted to get one to run windows off now there down to that,,,,,,

Much better value than the 120GB version but that's because you're also getting a controller card to get away from the SATA bottleneck.

ChefDude 29 October 2010 01:31 PM

those seagate hybrid drives are the way to go speed/space value for money

Ant 17 November 2010 11:38 AM

Tidgy 17 November 2010 11:44 AM

ducking hell, thats stupid money.

how hard is it to set up stripped drives? lol

GlesgaKiss 17 November 2010 01:55 PM

I'm not that clued up on computer stuff and have never had external hard drives, but am I reading that right as 2 terabytes of storage for 70 quid? What's the deal with the speeds and how do they compare to build in hard drives? Would prefer something like this so I could keep my laptop's hard drive freed up.

no your not right, from the email mentioned there now £50 :o

bigsinky 17 November 2010 02:31 PM

alan,

tidgy is right it is now £50. these are bare drives you can put in an external caddy. i have quite a few 500GB and 1 TB drives like this now as back up. you will be limited by the 300MB/sec transfer speed of USB2 but it is still enough to stream .avi files to your tv.

i am seriously thinking about a cheap SSD for my Win7 installation. 20 and 40GB drives can be had for buttons now.

Tidgy 17 November 2010 02:35 PM

sink, do you know how you setup up striped drives?

bigsinky 17 November 2010 02:41 PM

quite easy but you have to weigh up the transfer speed of a striped drive compared to the drive in JBOD format. i am not sure but i dont think you will necessarily get twice the speed.

Tidgy 17 November 2010 02:43 PM

you'll get some improvment though?

aslo you can recover one from the other can;t you?

Interesting cheers. Just noticed a few sites selling a WD 1TB external hard drive for £50. More space than I'll ever need. What's involved in buying a bare drive and putting in an external caddy? Because I'm thinking I might as well just buy this as there isn't any setting up required.

Ant 17 November 2010 05:16 PM

extra £10 get a 1.5tb http://www.ebuyer.com/product/244629

tidgy it depends on which RAID config you use. check out the wikipedia guide. i am guessing you want RAID 1+0. mirror and striped. you will need a minimum of 4 discs though to get the increased performance.

GlesgaKiss 17 November 2010 05:19 PM

Cheap again, but I'll never fill a 1TB in a million years, never mind 1.5! Lol
