the slower drives (125MB/sec) are coming down in price but the fast drives (280MB/sec) are still on the pricy side. new 240GB IBIS drive (720MB/sec) is around 600 odd quid.

Much better value than the 120GB version but that's because you're also getting a controller card to get away from the SATA bottleneck.

I'm not that clued up on computer stuff and have never had external hard drives, but am I reading that right as 2 terabytes of storage for 70 quid? What's the deal with the speeds and how do they compare to build in hard drives? Would prefer something like this so I could keep my laptop's hard drive freed up.

alan,

tidgy is right it is now £50. these are bare drives you can put in an external caddy. i have quite a few 500GB and 1 TB drives like this now as back up. you will be limited by the 300MB/sec transfer speed of USB2 but it is still enough to stream .avi files to your tv.

i am seriously thinking about a cheap SSD for my Win7 installation. 20 and 40GB drives can be had for buttons now.

quite easy but you have to weigh up the transfer speed of a striped drive compared to the drive in JBOD format. i am not sure but i dont think you will necessarily get twice the speed.

Interesting cheers. Just noticed a few sites selling a WD 1TB external hard drive for £50. More space than I'll ever need. What's involved in buying a bare drive and putting in an external caddy? Because I'm thinking I might as well just buy this as there isn't any setting up required.

tidgy it depends on which RAID config you use. check out the wikipedia guide. i am guessing you want RAID 1+0. mirror and striped. you will need a minimum of 4 discs though to get the increased performance.
