Did the turbo myself which cost me the tools only, say £20

The actuator was approx £130 also fitted myself.

So going by the 35 would not normally see 340+ thats what £3.75 per bhp, bargain

In answer to your "why isnt everyone doing it" question, I think that when most people max out their setup they opt to bang on a bigger turbo instead of having a play with the one they have. I did not have the money for a bigger turbo and loved the characteristics of the 35 so I had a little play with the wastegate and this is what happened.

I just checked the graphs, I did not even make 1.5 Bar on the Dyno, I was going off the screen of my Apexi Avcr. So assuming that the Dyno pressure reading is more accurate than my Apexi it ran 382bhp at just over 1.4 Bar

Big D,

Do you no longer suffer from compressor surge now? As in like 4th or 5th gear foot to floor, will boost build and stay perfectly or will it fluctuate?

That's real impresive mate. My car made 341/349 even with a cat on.. not enough tho, got used to the power so quickly, thinking about time to get it over 400... That's when I got the doll of course

Iain ,if you read my post it says" well done for backing up your words with hard facts, the point which i was making and i will say it again that the NORMAL power you can expect from a vf35 with normal mods is between 340 - 350 bhp,and that is also quoted from the bloke who tuned your car, No one has said it was not possible and you have quite clearly shown that it is and well done to you for that, just as harvey said in the original vf28 post he had 367 bhp out of a vf28.

I am not hard to please or have never doubted your sayings for a minute but 1 sunny day does not make a summer ,so out of the 1000's of people who have vf35 turbo's fitted to there car ,the ones running over 370 bhp probably make up 5 -10% as a guess ,which means the other 90% which is the majority are running 330 - 350 bhp,so a guy who upgrades his td04 to a vf 35 can expect to see 330 - 350 bhp, that is NOT the limit that the turbo can take, but it is what the majority of people who have upgraded there turbos have achieved.

Once again fair play for posting your graph ,and i am even more impressed as i was certain you must be modding the turbo slightly ,as altering the wastegate on its own imho would not yield such good power gains .well done

It was not really aimed at you mate but there were a few and still are a few who insist it is not possible. The results I have achieved are totally repeatable which is why I dont really care what the past majority of 35 power output is. Altering the wastegate is all I have done, the inlet to the turbine is un ported (for now) but that may yeild a small gain too.

Thanks for all the feedback though guys

Cheers Iain

Top results Iain. It has made me think now about trying to get more from my VF35 rather than just banging on a new larger turbo.

I'm currently waiting for Bob Rawle to map my Spec C and having spoken to him he was amazed at the result and very pleased it had made the figures posted.

Bob did tell me he thought the car was a 370+ bhp car, and I can assure you that Bob is no mug.

Bob also said the same to me ,but he did say that was an 'exception' to all the other cars that he had mapped that were fitted with a std vf35 turbo's ,and yes your right C.F he aint no mug,he did an absolute 'stellar' job on my 2000 uk turbo

Bob has mapped 2 other uk Imprezas with the VF35 which have had the wastegate ported (I did not do the porting on those but it was done under advice by me), both of these cars also saw above average power output

Graph or not.... people still think it's bull****!

Iain,
Don't worry about it..... I have had similar responses in the past!

Based on what Martyn has said about the temp correction, in reality you are talking about 370bhp. All the same.... still a great figure! Well done.

So if the fettling of the wastegate gets these kind of results on the VF35 then surley similar fettling of other stock turbo's ie TD04/TD05 etc would also see over average results?

300bhp from a td04

Not sure what you are on about with the temp correction, it ran 370 with 1.4 bar indicated on my apexi then with just a 4% duty increase the apexi read 1.5 and the power went up to 380+, looking at the graphs the dyno only showed just over 1.4 bar pressure so there was further scope for power I think that 380+ is fair and very realistic.

Nice figures!. I am in the process of buying a VF35, to be fitted and mapped early next year. Would love to achieve those results, but i would fear for my gearbox, and clutch

The 42º intake temp reading will increase the correction factor and bump up the figures, giving you a "this is what you car could make if the air feed to the intake was much better" kind of figure. A lot of RR operators will put the probe outside the car or run with the bonnet open on an FMIC car to minimise these effects.

Porting the wastegate shouldn't have any effect on boost/power EXCEPT to prevent boost creep. IMHO.

I've seen a RR printout for 366 bhp on a car with everything changed bar the turbo...

There's always a good one in every batch.

Well it defo works, a combination of porting the wastegate and the uprated actuator really improves the output. Its not just a one off either
