Oh come on, that's just desperation.

OK, let's take the Crusades then. Now, they were done in the name of Christianity in a time when 99.9% of the population believed. They utterly believed God was on their side.

However, they were slaughtered, in their tens of thousands. They prayed for victory, their cause was just. It would seem that wasn't answered.

I've just re-read it and maintain it was a good post. Tell me, Nick, are you a literalist; you know, Earth created in six days and so forth?

To be honest things like this seem trivial to me. When you have the faith I have, have seen and experienced God and no longer question his existence I tend to focus my attention on more important things.

So that I dont get accused of avoiding the question I have read that original texts state that the word day was translated from "a period of time" for simplicity. Whether Im right in saying this I dont know for sure but to be honest I dont really care too much. Im certainly not going to spend a lot of my time trying to find out. I can understand those looking for answers to explain whether God is real or not looking down this avenue but I dont believe you will ever get conclusive proof either way this way.

Why bother posting statements like this? Do you just want a fight/wind up?

I asked a simple question, are his theories based on guess work? or indeed fact. No-one answered, no fight needed if you can't even answer that.

Thanks for clearing that up!

I actually find the text of Genesis quite beautiful and, on a different level, have enjoyed exploring the gematria and how it reveals the knowledge hidden therein.

Let there be light....

@Nick, not the gibbon above.

I'm not sure how else you can translate a sentence that goes "and the morning and the evening were the first ...."

"...undefined period of time"?

Even if there was a way to demonstrate conclusively that no deity exists, believers would not accept it. That's what faith is. I find that terrifying.

I guess it means they were created first?

Not for me.

To be honest I dont believe you will ever find out. Its an intersting question reversed as well. I know people who believe in God and dont accept him because they dont want the implications.

Completely agree. Does it not make you wonder though? The more you find out the more it makes you think?

Have you read the first few verses of Genesis recently, or at all? The summary of each day of god's work ends with the line "And the evening and the morning were the nth day" - depending on which day it was. This is basic stuff for a believer and you didn't even recognise the reference!

Didnt I?

Anyway I was thinking more about what you said;

"Even if there was a way to demonstrate conclusively that no deity exists, believers would not accept it. That's what faith is."

If we speak hypothetically I dont think this would be the case. I think it would be far easier to go along with the crowd. Being a Christian is not easy and if it was proved that God didnt exist then I think it fall away very quickly.

If God didnt exist I believe I would fairly quickly suss this out and probably be a different person to how I am now as mentioned before.

Of course. It's about Logos and Mythos, Christ and Sophia, Yin and Yang, light and shade, left and right (hand paths/sides of the brain), science and religion and so on and so forth. Dualism, if you like. In other words, I feel it is possible to read text such as Genesis 1 and speculate upon it with the subjectivity that given conditions afford. Sometimes I just enjoy the words. I never entertain a literal interpretation.

Here's the thing; I'm Stoic (in the classical sense) and find theistic interpretation of scripture to be, quite literally, unreasonable. The Bible is a great book, Jesus was great guy, the supernatural has never revealed itself to me in a way that stands up to scrutiny.
