Another boring smartphone choice question
#31
I suppose the same was said by TV manufacturers when TV's first came out, "why have you made your TV square that was my idea.........."
People want a phone with a large screen that fits in there pocket, surely they are all going to look similar
If a phone comes out that is half screen half keyboard its going to look like another phone from another manufacturer that is half screen half keyboard.
Its good to see Android is absolutely storming ahead with so many more people using more and more different handsets every day, choice is a great thing

All this talk of limitations, what limitations? I don't feel limited in any way, and if Android was so open why do people Root it? Google have pulled many applications - some malicious - from the Marketplace and right off the devices.
Yes is is great that it's installed on so many devices, it's just a shame it's not the same version on all of them, what a ***** ache having so many different versions on so many different pieces of hardware needing different drivers and interface tweaks.
Android is great, I'm a big Google lover, but at the end of the day it's never going to be quite as good as iOS, free never is, look at Ubuntu, great for geeks but no where near OSX.

Limitations?
OK - straight off.
1. Bluetooth file transfer, or lack of.
2. Text message alerts - inability to change them, and only a choice of 10!
3. Convoluted process to apply personalised ringtones.
4. Not being able to save attachments from the Mail client.
5. Whilst Mac users enjoy relatively seamless integration with the computer/iTunes, PC-users (the by FAR, largest customer-base), don't have that same experience.
6. iPhoto sync issues (widely documented in the Apple support forums)
7. A relatively frustrating "intelligent" spell-check....
8. Some youtube vids don't work (important to me - due to my work, not necessarily to others)
The ONLY way I've got around most of these issues is to Jailbreak.
In fact that's the essence of the limitations - the requirement/right of the customer to personalise their phone.
But in all fairness to YOU, Jack, (and to quote yourself - "I don't feel limited in any way"), you don't feel limited in anyway. Personally, I do - certainly in comparison to other phones I've owned.
All the limitations I have highlighted (and I'm certainly not naive in thinking there aren't more) are glossed over by a shiny/easy-to-use interface.
For most users, the shiny-lights aspect is enough to gloss over the failings.
Not for me - I came from a cheaper/better contract over to iphone/O2 and have a less-functional (albeit pretty) phone for more money
Personally, when my contract is due, I will seriously think about the other options out there, and whilst Apple set the standard, they haven't maintained it (and that's hard for me to say, being an Apple (a) user, and (b) fanboy)
Dan
PS, most "rooting" experts do so, to upgrade to the latest OS - an aspect that hasn't been made transparent yet by Google (+ of course, putting cracked software/apps on their phone)
Jailbreak does the latter too, but only really lets you tweak the OS.

but to bring it back on topic (a) glad the OP has extended the life of his 'berry !
(b) keep us posted as to what to go for....
I'll be looking at the 9800, Windows phone, iPhone 4, and whatever else is generally comparable at the time

Limitations?
OK - straight off.
1. Bluetooth file transfer, or lack of.
There are many other methods of transferring files and bluetooth apps are available.
2. Text message alerts - inability to change them, and only a choice of 10!
Is that really a big deal?
3. Convoluted process to apply personalised ringtones.
Read the manual, it's simple and anyhow, the crazy frog is annoying.
4. Not being able to save attachments from the Mail client.
I can save attachments from the mail client. Often use it for .pfd, .doc and .gpx I'm sure other formats are supported.
5. Whilst Mac users enjoy relatively seamless integration with the computer/iTunes, PC-users (the by FAR, largest customer-base), don't have that same experience.
Integration with PC surpasses that of other phones.
6. iPhoto sync issues (widely documented in the Apple support forums)
Non issue for Millions of users.
7. A relatively frustrating "intelligent" spell-check....
Best available spell check on a mobile device.
8. Some youtube vids don't work (important to me - due to my work, not necessarily to others)
That's Youtube, not Apple.

Item 1 - should be effective "out of the box"
Items 2 & 3 are VERY important - especially with these 10s of millions of users who only have access to 10 text alerts.
Item 4 - might be a new OS4 thing in all fairness.
Item 5- proof?
Item 6 - so you don't believe the Apple support forums? Besides, regardless of the volume of unaffected people, surely it should work for owners?
Item 7 - in your opinion.
Item 8 - agreed
However, don't insult me by attempting to berate my IT/Mac skills, nor my preferences for how to set up my phone.
Android isn't similar, for 90% of those issues highlighted, it does these functions with ease. The thing that lets Android down is usually the hardware it's shoe-horned into. IIRC there was in interesting video where someone had put android onto an iphone - might have got that wrong though.
All phones have faults, the trick is finding one who's faults YOU can live with. And Jack, this in your case (as is the case with many owners) is the iphone. But it's not for everybody.
I would be very interested to see how many people, once their contract is up, stays with iphone, or moves on (and their reasons for doing so)....

However, let's attempt to keep this on topic please - I have no wish to turn this into ANOTHER iphone vs the rest of the world thread (Jack's monopolized those anyway )

Well the BB is back to rude health so no immediate rush but I would like to upgrade.
It seems, imho, that the htc desire is an absolute stonker of a phone, the 'only' downside I can find is the battery life. Which to me is a big deal. However when I read further I see that the people who find the battery really lousy have 3g and gps on all the time etc
When I bought my Bold I found the battery life awful until I turned down the screen brightness and turned 3g off (I just turn it on when needed).
So maybe the htc desire battery thing is over done? There are rumours that there is a htc desire hd with an even bigger screen being released soon, I may wait to see what this is like
