Another boring smartphone choice question
Sorry I know this isn't the most interesting of topics but....
The trackball on my Blackberry Bold has stopped working in the up direction. Luckily I'm due an upgrade within the next week.
On the whole I've been really happy with the BB, its been reliable, sturdy and easy to use. The only downside to the BB (as a smart) is that the screen is a little small for web browsing and you can't have multiple windows loaded at the same time.
Saying that my primary use is actually as a PHONE, I need something that will have excellent signal/reception and battery life and ease of access to email. Web browsing is a secondary but I do really like the ability to be able to browse on the move.
So, shall I just get another BB and accept that its an excellent phone and not bad at web browsing or is there another option?
IP4 obviously springs to mind, and I don't want to open that can of worms as I know its been done to death on here but does the case actually solve the problem completely such that it would operate as well as the BB for signal/reception?
Thanks

Galaxy-S is pretty huge though if you've seen one in the flesh.
Apollo maybe a better choice.
I'm still iffing and arring on what to get. (HTC desire, Samsung Apollo, IP4, 3GS or wait for Sony to bring out an Android v2 phone)

I would say take a look at the 9800 too. If you are happy with the BB but want a bigger screen it might be the answer. Not out for a few weeks yet though here. OS 6 looks nice too.
In the meantime, try and alcohol wipe, like a first aid kit one. Apply a little pressure and roll it around and around. That was my one hate of the trackballs lol.

HTC are or have brought out a new model that's supposed to be good..... I think it's called the EVO 4G or something. A friend has a HTC Desire though and the battery life is terrible.

Evo 4G is US model. Check out Google for 'HTC ACE' or 'HTC Desire HD' to get au fait with the current rumours. But looking at October for release I think.

BB Torch, here's my favorite quote.
"This was a phone that claimed to be an evolutionary step forward, but still somehow had an inexcusably wimpy 480x360-pixel 3.2-inch display and 624 MHz processor. That's not even keeping up with the big boys, much less surpassing them. How could RIM not have seen that?"

for me if that display size means good battery life I'd take that happily.
I thought processor speed didn't matter too much Jack if the user experience was up to scratch?
I do agree to some extent though. i think it will soon be surpassed by a new BB runing OS6

You're absolutely right, but that's not my quote and I didn't want to edit it. The torch is a disaster though, tiny screen and tiny keyboard, people with Sausage fingers will have real problems.

The BB torch seems to have had some poor reviews, I need to look into it a bit more.
The HTC desire seems to have poor battery life.
Help me lord, I'm thinking about buying an iphone4

It was somthing I noted when playing with them on the display models in the phone shop with Galaxy being sat directly alongside a HTC desire, and that was certainly a smaller phone. Obviously iPhones have their own stand so its hard to get them side by side with other phones for a proper look.

Snazy's idea about the alcohol wipe seems to have cured my trackball problem
I'm still due an upgrade but now the pressure is off to get a new phone immediately. I think I'll wait to see what the htc epic is like, the desire seems like a fantastic phone except for the battery life, if they can resolve that on the epic then it seems to be the one to get.
Thanks to all.

I unplug at 7am and plug back in at 11pm and I use it all day with wifi on, with a lot of emailing and browsing with the new charging process I hope to increase this further.
The only thing that kills the battery is the GPS or being in a poor signal area...I recently took out another contract and took a second HTC desire, nothing else can touch it at them moment, i would have taken the samsung galaxy s if it had a led flash and a metal body like the desire.

Trackballs are the devils spawn though. New bbs much better in that respect.

The Samsung Galaxy S is a fake iPhone if ever I've seen one.
I can see it now "Oh, you've bought an iPhone, good choice", "No, this is the Samsung Galaxy S, it comes with Android a free operating system and cost me 99p on contract", "Knock off Nigel"

Nope, it's not perfect but it is the phone that other manufacturers aspire to produce. Have you seen the Galaxy, it's laughable how much of an imitation it is.

I would actually challenge (but agree), that whilst the Galaxy/Android is a blatant iphone rip-off, it just seems to have expanded on some good Apple ideas.
The big one will be that of price & available plans. Those that don't want to subscribe to Apple's (in comparison) steep price plans will find this phone an attractive option.
Personally, I'm still not convinced - I've never liked Samsung phones (quite like Android though)
Yes, the iphone is sh1te. But as a whole, it does work. Just. My annoyance is the amount of limitations Apple has imposed on its customers.
I will have a good look at the 'berry 9800. I'm pretty sure that with updates, it will be a pretty good alternative to the iphone playtoy.
FWIW - I had an N95. The first ones had some shocking OS...but with updates, they got better....
Time will tell.
