Console Gaming vs PC Gaming

I have an xbox360 and the only game I really play is FM3.
Maybe a couple of hours a month.
Play RFactor on the PC, probably 20-30 hours a month.
I prefer the ease of play and online set up on the 360, but for me the PC game although it does not look as good as FM3, its better to play and also hack.
So, I will be sticking to my PC.
I have still yet to see a PC that will play FSX with all options on max and run a good fame rate (say 50fps).
My existing PC is a dell, only a 1.8ghz machine - prob 3-4 years old now.
Will replace it one day, but I still have a PC running now that I got back in 2002.... so 8 years is ok for me!
I was considering buying a PS3, but I dont think I will bother now as a lot of the reviews have been a bit poor of late.
I think a new PC will be on the cards towards the end of the year - once prices of the newest CPUs come down a bit.
IIRC we are coming up to a "flop" of the flip flop... or is it tick tock... I cant remember!!!

Kinda related, i just sold my old gaming GFX card on ebay the other day, and the chap has sent me a message
I think he is happy with his purchase (it was an AGP X1950 PRO)
Flogged for 35quid (cost me about 50 quid a few years back)
Spent a fiver from the cards paypal cash on Burnout Paradise in the steam sale yesterday
Dear mickyowens,
soz mickey , nearky forgot ya feedback..ill do it now. yeh i opted for a 600w dual 12v rail. suck more amps than my cooker. Im run a small IT firm (staff = 1 : me hehe) and it strip and rip bits in and out, but of the 4 psu here the top was a 350...no good wouldnt entertain it. Saphire say 450 watt 30amp..jeesh..this card si just a breather till i build an sli or for my little boy as i went down the road of how a pc could **** all over an xbox 360. So the wallets going to have to come out abit further. I was running a ati radeon 9800xt...he loves team fortress now and ut3...even crysis on runs min just need a bit more oompf and shader 3, although for aurguements sake would have been cheaper getting him an xbox360. i like to bend systems & even though im microsoft certified professional I would with the 360, but theyve got hot on the ip banning, and ive fixed enough rrod on them to last a lifetime. Cheers anyhow mickey..blinding service. be lucky l8rz - danny

They were not 250quid when they were new and considered a "decent spec"
I can not remember the full price list now, but i thought my current rig cost about 5/600 quid when i built it a year ago,
I had a Sega Saturn when they were new and that did not last very long at all
I probably split my gaming 50/50 between the 360 and the PC, depending on the missus watching mind numbing trash on the TV

Unless PCs can offer something to appeal to non IT people, consoles will continue to dominate.
I love my PC, and I use it for lot's of things my console can't do, but when I want quick, dirty gaming action, it has to be my console

This will not do, Command and Conquer must be played with the aid of a keyboard and mouse, in dark room (small box room) with only the glow of the computer screen for company.

Pc gaming is always better on 1st person shooters but keeping up with the top games costs a fortune in specs for the pc. It wasn't that long ago I got pissed off with EA as I was after Command and Conquer Red Alert and I was after the quick download. On EA's site it was £20 for an electronic download with no disks or manuals posted but on Ebay I could buy the proper game delivered for £12.

What about first person shooters with the new Kinect, thousands of people will be standing in their living room, gun or knife in hand acting out killings in a Rock Band style. Horrific really.

Time wise, I spend no longer updating my pc than I do my consoles. I set my pc up right when I built it
PS3 updates are a joke due to the network it's all running on, fair do's it's free but I expect better from Sony (I think, lol) the xbox is much better, ok I paid 40 or whatever for a years gold membership but it tends to run flawlessly and updates are pretty quick generally.

Some of the recent PS3 games like MW2 literally install nothing on your hard drive and run mostly off the blu-ray disc.

I used to think that if you mixed it up PC vs PS3/XBOX on something like MW2 that PC gamers would walk it but I think it would be pretty even.
Also look at the numbers of players. For PS3 MW2 the lowest person in my friends list is ranked just under 10 millionth. And Ive no doubt that Xbox will have twice that number of players.

I think the X360 title patches are limited to something like 5mb by microsoft, unless it is DLC .......
I can remember reading about the Gears of War title updates and the devs talking about how they could only do so much with the 5mb they were allowed.

I play both console and pc and have gone more with console over the last 2 yrs,i used to love playing games like Halo,Battlefield 2142 etc on the pc,especially playing in a dark room, with my keyboard and Razer mouse that pulsates a glowing light yeaaaaa felt like a proper gamer,i would update and install all the latest Graphic cards etc but just got to the point where i didn't want to do it anymore,i just switch the xbox on and away i go for a couple of hours..When played flight sim x alot of players on the forums would complain about Glitching you couldn't really run it on high spec, computers were actually being built and specced just for that game.Maybe this thread will inspire me to blow the dust off my probably outdated Razer copperhead mouse and give pc gaming another go.

The Kinect will die on it's ****, it will never work with games like Modern Warfare, it's basicaly going to apeal to casual gamers, but casual gamers already have a Wii, and i don't see them swapping that for an xbox. I love my 360 but the Kinect is a waste of time.

You have a lacking imagination. Have you never moved in your seat? Never scrunched your face when you're stabbed violently in the neck? Given someone the finger in a driving game? All these things will be used and you'll wonder how you did without them. It's not all about dancing like a pansy.

PC's are always going to have leading edge tech - at a price premium. You don't need that kind of gear to play on a PC - a rig circa £500 will do fine.
Gaming wise:
PC:
FPS
RTS
MMORPG
Casual gaming
Web
Office
Movies (al la media centre) - BluRay & DVD rips
Initial purchase expensive, games etc cheaper
Console:
Racing
Beat em ups
"Casual" gaming
FPS - but still better on PC
Limited Movies
Initial purchase cheap, games more expensive.

Im sorry but that is b******s. I dont even game on my PC and there are still more regular updates required for Windows and things like Flash. Tbh I can hardly remember the last big PSN update. Even when there is one you are talking minutes to update so what these people are doing that takes over 1hr I have no idea.

Used to work for them and they generally couldn't run a p1ss-up in a brewery

to add some flavour to the mix, im spending £413 on upgrading my machine, well its a new machine, only saving that wouldn't be normal included in that is a grqphics card that im getting for half the retail cost and im reusing my sou nd card. it will play all the current games at max settings (mates got a machine with lowerspec and his does fine).
as far as monitor goes, you still need a tv to play on consoles so if you include that then the cost of the console is more expensive than the pc more or less.
it got mentioned somewhere about consoles not having issues with runnign all the games that come out for them, well thast because after 6 months the games are limited by the hardware, not the software itself, pc game programmers dont have that issue.

Also, having seen the footage of the new Crysis game bieng run on a console with no PC footage available it suggests to me that the game has been made for consoles first then a port to PC.
Although clearly stifling the game from being truly great on PC it also means that hundreds of pounds on a graphics card is uncessary as long as the card can perform just as well a 3 year old console. My GTS8800 612MB card is worth about £40

That is the reason why i think PC gaming will not need a huge "upgrade rush" for the forseeable future, the majority of the games will be made for an "out of date" console setup, then just ported over, maybe with a few extra textures.
From what i saw, the X360 & PC versions of Mass Effect 2 were also identical.
As for the Kinect thing, i have been testing some headtrack software on the PC that just uses a simple webcam (no gay IR leds on my head), and running around in a FPS is a lot better when you simply turn your head to look about, while walking forwards by using the controller.

Not sure on Mass Effect 2 (which I frikkin love!) will have to check whether that was a console to pc port (seems likely though considering the way it's designed).
