Yeah, I got the diff prop shaft and driveshafts etc..... So shouldn't have any problems.

I am on the look out for an R180 sized diff that has the same drive ratio as the gear box. The R180 in it is 4.44 so will be no good. Keep an eye out for a type R gearbox, prop and diff etc... for sale soon people!!

Got this EJ22 CDB delivered today. A bit on the filthy side but there is no corrosion on the external cast aluminum, cylinder bores are minted and the main bearing line bore is spot on as well!!

Next on the agenda will be to get it cleaned up and ready for machine work.
1. Re-bore for 97.5mm pistons.
2. Convert to rear thrust.
3. Drill and tap block halves for 14mm stud + nut kit.
4. Clean up cylinder head gasket faces by skimming 1-2 thou.

I'll do this during the February week of!! LOL!! I love being a teacher!!

Thanks mate
Ok, I've taken the original engine out for a few reasons. Firstly to sort out a nasty exhaust leak, re-shim the valves, change the crankshaft oil pump seal and fit a new timing belt. I had a little bit of an accident while walking from my house to the garage across the "DECKING" Holding a tray full of freshly cleaned bits n pieces I tripped up and some bits ended up falling down between the slats of the decking. I tried for the best part of an hour and got most of the bits out with a magnet pen but didn't get all of them. Thanks to some forum members for sorting me out with the bits and bolts I lost......

I should have the engine sorted and ready to be put back in the car along with 6 speed gearbox this weekend This will allow me to still take the car to the track while building the 2.35 engine.

Graeme!!!............... What you up to on Saturday????

Weighed all the pistons, gurgeon pins and con rods. All components were within 0.2 - 0.8 grams of each other so matched them with their corresponding weights so each complete assembly weighed the same......or there abouts.

In the end I managed to get each assembly to be within 0.2 grams of each other. Bearings and pistons rings had no weight discrepancies so were not included in this weight balancing. I'll start building the EJ22 block up soon.

I've now decided to go down the PPG route for the gearbox as the car is a track car it will never really require a sixth gear. Moreover the six speed box is a lot heavier. So I'm putting the 6 speed up for sale. See the parts for sale section for more info.

hey, I might've misread the thread... but are you after a 5 speed dog box? I just sold my PPG one, but still have a spare Modena that's all rebuilt if you're keen.. it's a GC8 style 5 speed..

Default Slight up date!!

Firstly, the original engine. I'm gonna fit this back into the car. As stated previously this will allow me to continue to track the car while the EJ22 is being built. However, things have been at a stand still for a few months as I've been busy with loadsa other things. The original engine is still out of the car. The exhaust leak is fixed along with the crankshaft oil seal. A new timing belt and tensioner have been purchased. I've got one more cylinder head still to re-shim and then I'll get the engine back in the car. I should have that done for the first week of April.

Secondly, the EJ22 engine. The block modifications are nearly done. I should be able to start the build during the second week of April................ lets just wait and see.

b2knz! Thanks for the offer, but I'm gonna have to leave it for just now.

Cheers

OK............ so its been a while!

Quick up date, haven't done a thing really. The build was supposed to start in April however I've just been busy doing other things. The original engine was fitted and during the summer I've been at several track days so thats been taking up the time and the money.....

I've been tweeking suspension components, particularly the strut top mounts, so have a look at the up dated spec list in 28th December thread.

The block machine work was finished during the summer.
1. Re-bore for 97.5mm pistons.
2. Convert to rear thrust.
3. Drill and tap block halves for RCM 14mm stud + nut kit.
4. Block faces surface ground 1.5 thou.
5. Drilling and reaming cylinder heads for 14mm stud conversion

Heres some pics
On the mill being drilled and tapped for the studs

Ready for surface ground

Head being drilled and reamed

Thats all for now. I'm headin up Knockhill on Starturday the 17th for an SIDC trackday which will probably be the last one this year for me.

Next job, gap the piston rings so I will calculate the optimum ring gap for my purpose etc... and get that done. Then I'll probably start rebuilding the cylinder heads.

Saalro: ABS wasn't in the car to start with so I just modified the original brake lines.

Chris79: I have access to an engineering workshop (my old place of work before I became a teacher) so thats where I do all my engine building.

Update
Another SIDC track day last Saturday the 17th and the type R was flawless!! Fitted a larger alloy radiator and done away with 1 of the fans and had no over heating issues at all. Managed a 59.6 second lap time on the virtually original/standard engine and gearbox. I'm now gonna be selling them as my big build 2.35 and DCCD 6 speed set up are waiting to get some time spent on them. Everything has just been sitting there gathering dust over the winter there as I moved house in January there. Renting out the old house, getting it up to a rentable standard and getting money together for the new one has really taken up of a lot of time. However, with spring just around the corner it may be time to get the ball rolling again.

Things to do:
1. Finish building up the cylinder heads.
2. Build up the engine block.
3. Assemble the engine.
4. Develop a dry sump system.

Unfortunately I need to the get the garage organised to get me some space as it has became a dumping ground for all my sh*t!! So gonna get that sorted during the easter holidays.

Cheers for reading the thread guys!

A few reasons;
1. Cause her lovely living room is now an engine building haven.
2. Some engine assembly lube has dripped onto the floor and made a bit of a mess.
3. It stinks of "oily bits" in the living room now.

Personally.....I don't see what the problem is
