I was wondering if anyone will get some foil backed tape and stick "NO BOMB HERE" to their chest, or other interesting jovial messages

"Low-Level" X-Rays? My ****!!

Integumentary structures naturally are more exposed to solar radiation than other body tissues, so there is a big question regarding the biological threshold of skin in respect to low-dose ionizing radiation. In this study, adult male albino rats were exposed chronically to low-dose (0.015 cGy/sec) X-rays for 9 and 18 mo, with total X-ray doses of 2.025 and 4.050 cGy, respectively. In both the dose groups, hyperkeratinization was noted in skin by transmission electron microscopic (TEM) study. Atomic absorption spectrometric (AAS) study revealed decreased zinc concentration (p<0.01), increased iron concentration (p<0.001), and status quo cadmium concentration. Moreover, the ratio between zinc and iron became highly depleted in both the irradiated groups. Hence it may be stated that chronic low-level X-rays induce redistribution of biometals in the skin. Nevertheless, specific concentrations of biometals indicate the risk-prone status of irradiated skin.

Seriously though the comment about "racism"? Now, I don't see many Sheiks trying to blow up planes (they are the ones who wear Turbans by the way......) . Simple statement of fact people; the current major Terrorist threat against Westerners comes from Muslim males aged between 18 and 35.

The sooner we stop titting around worrying about "upsetting peoples feelings" and worry more about people getting blown up, the better.

Your rights as an individual are nothing compared to wider societies right to live in safety.
Do you mean Sikhs?
Sheikhs generally are too wealthy to interested in blowing themselves up in my experience.

This looks very interesting indeed.
Perhaps you could tell us how many background x-ray scatter scans one would have to undergo in order to cause a statistically significant level of hyperkeratinization of the epithelium?

However, I do think it should just be Muslims that have to go through these things. Normal White English families going on Holiday are unlikely to be out to blow the plane up.
I guess doing this would mean discrimination, and that would leave the door open for every Muslim scum to sue the Government.
No need to basically say anyone Muslim is scum btw. Anyhow, how do you know who is Muslim?

I have a friend who has married a Muslim. I have no doubt they are decent people with no intentions of blowing up planes, but one is obviously foreign, the other is white as they come. If they were some sort of terrorists, by your way of seeing things, he could be checked by the machine, and she would go unchecked. Most likely not travelling at the same time. Therefore with your approach, potential terrorists would go unchecked. There are plenty of white people being 'converted' to the extremist ways, so how do you ever know just by looking at skin colour/dress? Just as much as I would imagine a huge chunk of 'people of a certain colour' are not terrorists, just wanting to go about their business as much as us 'whities'.

It's not all about discrimination, or letting people go, it's about doing as much as possible to minimise the risk.

I'm not sure if I agree with this or not. Not because of human rights, but only because I don't know if this would really work.

We already have a portable scanner in Notts, which gets wheeled out on a Friday/Saturday night and attached to a bus-stop, so anyone disembarking is scanned for knives etc.

It may not be any good for explosives, but it's a step in that direction.

I hope you are joking!

If it means I have to queue for another 30mins at the airport while people ahead of me are scanned (regardless of their unproven effectiveness, they are a major deterrent) to determine if there is 'only one guy with explosives taped to his leg' trying to board my plane then I will gladly suffer that indignity! Discredit discredit! Suppress suppress! I wonder how much certain people get paid for trolling these posts and quelling any opposition to this type of thing?

Good find Jods.. I read something similar, albeit a seperate study. It also mentioned that the pulse waves affect the replication and transcription of the DNA causing it to unwind or something .Ohh btw this ionizing radiation builds up just like heavy metals so the more you fly the more exposed your DNA becomes.

The radiation dose from one of these machines is incredibly low, so unless you were going through one every day there is no additional risk to your health. In fact, you receive a far larger annual dose from naturally occurring radiation than you do from anything man made, unless you have been undergoing medical treatment.

That doesn't mean that the scanners are a good idea though - it is widely recognised that this is just another of GB's knee jerk reactions, made without considering the full implications (such as the fact that airport workers have to be searched every day, so can't be subject to the scans).

So no more damaging than say taking a mobile phone call. Anyway, you'll get a lot more radiation on the flight than being put through the scanner.
They do say that the use of mobile phones with transmissions right next to your head is saving up some severe problems for the future as far as damage to the brain etc is concerned. The mobile phone companies don't want to even think about that at the moment of course. The returns are so good!

Any kind of electromagnetic transmission can have an effect on the body depending on the degree of exposure.

Yes Boxst, did not know about what you say about scanners in Tel Aviv. Its frightening really! Such a useful control device for the authorities.

I am a bit pissed about this, as i usually get singled out anyway, and asked to pose infront of the machine behind the screen while they scan my tadger.

This is because i look a little like a thug

The upshot of this is that i always get a que jump to the front of the que a few moments later.

The intense glee of the queing goons, who take delight and chuckling at somebody being taken from the back of the que, is replaced by utter guttedness, at seeing me past the terrorist checkpoint, enjoying a lot of free, unsmelly space.
Yes this side of the fence is much nicer thanks, enjoy your que BAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH

And now they are taking this perk away from me??

Are you guys not reading my posts? It is virtually impossible for you to get on a plane with a terrorist based upon security measures in place already. Planes almost never get blown up. It's not gonna happen. You really don't need to be inconvinienced for another 30mins every time you catch a flight.

Maybe if people did the job properly.

Not sure what to make of this.
On the one hand, anything to make air travel safer can only be a good thing but this seems like a massive invasion of privacy.
The image seen, is naked It does not say it can see in the body. What about those people who errr have explosives up the old ring. Would that show
Would the operators be vetted to make sure they are not pervs

I'm also not keen on the "have no right to refuse". Do we have ANY rights at all

For crying out loud, the damn' things won't make a blind bit of differene anyway:

Schneier on Security: Christmas Bomber: Where Airport Security Worked

and they are simply REACTING again... the thing that stops terrorism is old fashioned Police work. Intelligence, following leads, stopping the people.

The bloody bomb wouldn't have worked, the stuffs near impossible to blow up, all he would've done is burned himself.

Stop the Panic on Air Security

PLEASE read these articles... it really helps put things into perspective. These scanners are an utter, utter waste of time

If you want to get on carrying dodgieness just get on in a 3d world country - ideally one that's quite unstable and more interested in water wells than X Rays.

Meantime my toddlers were getting frisked and scanned at Heathrow by unfamiliar looking people with foreign accents... Many thoughts crossed my mind (none of which I liked or would repeat). Still, as long as its the intelligent approach that keeps us all as safe as possible ...

OMG OMG WTF WTF shock horror!!

So what, unless you have a very small weiner and you have a complex about your very small weiner (quite a few seem to have small weiners in this thread by the looks of it) then its all for the better, I would feel much better being 90% sure after one of these checks that the "gentelman of Asian decent " sitting infront of me isnt packing C4 than sitting wondering if he could be packing C4, why complain about something that "could" end up saving our lifes FFS!
