lol Nicely put Les.
So what then Martin, let me gues 95% of the people on receipt of these laptops will use them to their best use, need them, and be more than deserving... right ?

Benefits are there for the fiddling. Yes there are some needy people out there that deserve the help on offer, but there are also a large bunch of people unwilling to work, willing to cheat, and only too keen to benefit too.

So is it now not allowed to question these peoples intentions?

I wonder what measures will be in place to stop these laptops and connections being abused.

Not sure I said I agreed or disagreed with the policy. I said it's shameful reading some of the hate filled comments and gross simplifications on this thread.

Good God you are close minded, my Brother in law lives with a family of 5 1 mother and 4 kids (by different fathers, She has the council pay for her housing and 4 kids (1 over 16), etc she has never worked in her life.

They have 3 x LCD tv's, 3 games consuls Sky and assorted DVDplayers holidys twice a year.

No one in that house earns or contributes

Do you think they are the only ones Martin?

Schools have internet access
Libraries have it too
It is not like they are going without, just need to apply themsleves a bit to get the access if they want it.

Small minded and bigotted no, sick of seeing money fettered away

Oh dear, a little over emotional there maybe?
Im sure the "hate" is directed at the right people. Its not picking anyone out, singling out, naming and shaming.... Just pointing out that there are a large number of worthless cheats out there.

Sorry, the labour government HAVE created a new benefit class, and if posters who pay their taxes on SN want to vent their frustration at what their contributions are spent on, then who are you to come in with your holier than thou attitude?

We already have a very generous benefit system that houses, feeds and clothes millions of people. This is 1 step too far. If you want something, you bloody well work for it.

What next? Free family holidays to Florida for low income families
Only if they behave badly enough lol !

I reckon it's more Lying Labour "scorched earth" policy.

The more the b@stard can spend now, the worse he is going to make whoever takes power in 6 months look.

I certainly don’t think that everyone is a deserving case (far from it), but that doesn’t mean I’m going to dismiss everyone who has a low (or no) income as ‘scum’.

Come on you’re a sensible chap, surely you can endorse this view.

Martin: I can't see anywhere on this thread where anyone said that all low paid people were scum?

One poster DID refer to a "scum class", however......

Are you denying that such a class exists?

What you all don't realise is that it's the immigrant shower that will get all the PC's and internet access, then they can plan the march to Wooton Basset and contact the brothers in Pakistan...........brilliant.

£300m???? FFS how about spending the £300m on things the country needs instead of giving freebies out that aren't essential? Or how about not spending it all and not getting the country into further debt.

How about these people who want to know how their kids are getting on at school go and speak to the teachers, call the school or go and use a computer in a library if they want to see their kids online reports?

Everyone else has to pay to buy a computer/laptop and pay for broadband/phone line so why should some get it for free? So will they be paying for them to have a BT landline as well so they can have their free broadband? How about they pay for it thermselves and if they can't afford then they go with out like anyone else who works and goes without things they can't afford

This country is in the worst debt it's ever been in and this joker wants to throw another £300m away FFS. Roll on the General Election, only problem is who ever gets in will inherit all the **** the current **** has created and have to deal with the aftermath.
Me and the Mrs are low earners and I would feel almost ashamed if I was handed free internet and a laptop for being classed as such. I may not have much money but everything I currently have is mine, bought and paid for when I was earning more (well apart from a mortgaged house).

Ridiculous decision, looking for the scum vote IMHO.

i work all month to be 72quid better off than what i would be on benifits but i doubt ile get one . no doubt they will be dished out to the passangers on the platform of life . but then hang on this could be a cost saving exersise . close all job centres and benifits offices and do it all on line BARGAIN no more need for the passangers to leave the comfort of thier sofa therefore freeing up vast amount of seats on public transport clearing the roads for scooby owners who can be bothered to GET OFF THIER *** AND WORK.

This beggars belief. Pensioners get between £125 and £400 to keep warm in the winter, a pittance really.
Yet the Government can waste millions giving out laptops
I know where I would prefer my tax to go

When i was made redundant I was entitled to nothing but 6 months of contributions based jsa. it does seem if you have something they will take it. If you have nothing they will dish it out, pure socialism.

I think that this is being funded by the £398m spending cuts in universities announced just before Christmas so graduates can leave with even bigger debts.

This policy of free laptops is nothing more than trying buy more votes from those who have benefited most from NL and it seems its an ever increasing demographic. If they have flat screen tv's, sky subscription, games consoles, dvd players etc, chances are they will aleady have a laptop and broadband. Now they can flog their new laptops and have broadband paid for by the tax payers.

I would imagine there will be a percentage of families in the "bracket" who would greatfully recieve and cherish their lap top, but the other 95% would either break theirs within 6 months (and expect a replacement) flog it and then break into their neighbours and steal theirs and flog it.

This Labour party has to go down as the govt that wasted more money on jobs for the boys and silly vote enticing ideas than any other is history.

If I had 300m available this lap top idea would be nowhere near the top.

NHS
Armed Forces
Schools
Infrastructure (mind you we'd be lucky to get one road and that would have to be resurfaced within 6 months).

It's stuff like this I keep passing onto the wife when she gets homesick, mind you ther're no better down here in all honesty

This can only be regarded as yet another NL initiative designed to gain political capital in the run up to the coming election.

How can they possibly justify spending money in such a way when this country is on its knees anyway and will remain so for a very long time.

There are countless more deserving cases to spend money on.

Martin,

You really need to get your head out from your naieve **** and get a grip on reality.

Of course not every low income family is scum. In the same way that not all muslims are terrorists.

However, just as most of the terrorists operating currently are "muslims", most of the scum of this country fall into the low income bracket.

Either way, spending 1/3 of a billion pounds on luxuries (CV's can be written up, then typed and printed and copied in various publicly accessable places) in the current climate is abhorrent and the timing is clearly (to those of us who's eyes are open to the real world) related to winning votes.
