Best HIDs
#37
I have been following this thread with some interest as i have been thinking about getting a set of H4 HID's for my MY99....but now im even more confused!!wonder:
Is the pic above of a car fitted with a retro-fit projector unit or simple H4 HID's??
Does anyone rate the H4 full/dipped combined kits without the projectors fitted?
Fair enough there is far more white light but is the scatter really that bad, and what is the best colour to go for, im thinking 8000k?
Those projectors with black lens' look amazing, i would buy a set of them tomorrow if i could and get the HID kit for them, that would be fantastic looking

Thanks mate, I should probably make it faster just in case eh?
If you're going OE on the projectors get the best you can, ie.Porsche etc.
Or stump up and get some like mine........moooohaha

There are those out there who will tell you that a simple conversion is OK. I have done one, and I can tel you unequivocally, that the scatter was awful and the beam pattern virtually unrecognisable. OK, the lights are BRIGHTER, but I'd NOT like to drive any distance on them on backroads, thanks.
If I can get onto it, I SHALL be going retrofit, and my Morettes will go on e-bay or on here
The further you go up the colour spectrum, the mnore blue, then purple the light output, and the less usable by the human eye.
My Hella 1000FF's are 4500K.
As far as scatter is concerned, see my comment above: Scoob lights are renowned for scattering light everywhere, that's why they are so crap And if you put brighter bulbs in, you get MORE scatter.

I used Darms guide when i did mine just didnt go for the angel eyes and used Merc CLK projectors. Took around a week per light to do and was'nt that difficult in all honesty.
Also did my bike while i was at it.
I reckon if someone supplied me with all the parts would be happy to do the conversion for £150. Also if Darms has a good stock of projectors p.m a list of what you can get and i may be able to sell a few for you got lots of people after me doing a conversion for them

Meant to say....getting back to the colours of the HID kits, does anyone know what colour an Evo 8's HID headlights would be, 4500k, 6000k, 8000k??
Thats the colour im after!!
And do all the aftermarket HID kits give that 'flicker' on start up and then get brighter and brighter to full light?

I dont see any reason why you could'nt keep your electric adjusters mine are manual ones but thats only because the lights i used were manual adjust. In the middle of building a new workshop/home for the bike at the moment once that is done i will let you know and maybe make a few sets of classic lights and sell them just need to find a good supplier of projectors then source some crystal clears off here for as cheap as poss then i can build a couple of sets so everyone can stop with this cheap H4 hid kit fad and have proper headlights

Like the evil eyes
Yes the car above is retrofitted with projectors designed specifically for the retrofitting market so not off a merc or OE vehicle.
And the shield is already modified to give a colourful cut-off line and they have clear lens as not to hinder the light output and make the cut-off razor sharp.
Bulbs used are Phillips 85122+ D2S 4300k
Exact projector I used:

Other peoples outputs:

Or you could just send your light units away and wait for them to come back all retro'd and shiny.........

My two penneth....
Avoid 6000K or higher for main beam, as the extra blue light is scattered in murky/misty conditions....
dunx ( 3 x HID's.... )

Thanks Bob
Yes I think that a complete retrofitted light unit is the only way to go. The ones currently available though aren't that discreet!!
A set of your H1 HIDs kits is running my Hella Spots, its a fantastic kit and the slimline ballast is a must when trying to hide them behind your bumper.

I had months of searching and was lucky enough to find a brand new set in a back cupboard in Manchester, forgotten about for years. Sold em to me at half price, due to old stock.
Anyway, they are Speedline ST2's discontinued years ago. They will not fit over Brembo's you'll struggle to find a set of 17's that do.
And just in case you can be bothered for a lengthy read....an old thread.

Just been looking at The Retrofit Source (U.S.) - HID Projector Retrofit Kits, Retrofit and HID Componenents, Projectors Lens, Wiring Harnesses, Shrouds and more!
So many cool parts!
They even have a kit to convert the H4 HID set I just got (which should do me for a while!) to retrofit...
What do you guys think?

Get em ordered......
Great company to deal with and good comms.
Speak to a guy called Matt, mention me and I might get further discounts
Just been in touch with him today to get some bits myself actually.
matt@theretrofitsource.com
If you order the bulbs from Matt, go for the Philips 85122+ 4300k bulbs, they have the brightest whitest output.
