Been watching this little war of words for a few weeks. Quite funny.
I would love to do the retrofit style but don't really have the skills to do it.
Had HIDs previously on my MY99 and they did light the road much better than standard halogens. I got a few flashes from cars though so I guess the light scatter issue can effect other road users. Anyway the HID set that was on the car died so am waiting to fit one of BOBs kits. Will wait and see but for the money and for people that are on a limited budget or can't do another option I do think HIDs are a worthwhile investment.
Each to their own!
Show me an off the shelf projector unit and I would be a happy man though!

Lovely darms. Is that an angel eye kind of light. Saw something that looks a little like the BMW ring - looks great.
How much would people pay for a new upgrade headlight unit for a classic?
I guess I would be thinking around the £200 mark (not including HID BULB ETC)
Those in the know may be able to tell me if that is wishful thinking or a possibility if made in bulk?

Tried some off the shelf ones on my car and they didn't work well - the projectors were too small or badly designed. Back to the original headlamps and our HIDs now. Would like to find a cost effective soloution, but no joy yet. The next attempt is going to buy in some projectors and new original headlamps - might be a long way off as I'm not convinced they will be cost effective and short on time at the moment.
At the moment people have a choice of going hacking up their headlamps and retrofitting or just sticking with the original headlamps. Either way, HIDs all the way.

If you were to pay someone to do a projector retrofit ya looking in the region of £500 (well that's what I'd have to charge as its really gotta be worth my while, just too busy these days ).
Makes far more sense to do it yourself mate .

I may be able to help you out here as i am looking at doing another retro fit on another set of classic lights so mine may be up for sale soon or if you can get the parts for a retrofit i will do them for you. May take me a month or so to do them but dont mind doing them. I am actually thinking of doing a couple of sets if i can get the parts.

Or just an aftermarket bulb conversion/ballast kit?
If it's the latter, I'd not bother.........seen it done on a Scoob H4 light and the beam patterns were crap, plus scatter was awful, and main beam was p*ss poor. Brighter? Yes, but long-term useable ? Nope
