I had a CTR in the past, once rolling theres not to much in it with a WRX.

My thoughts would be, if you had a WRX eventually you would think, hmm i wish it was a little faster, and then either be looking for an STI or get yours up to spec. Anything else over 280bhp you are talking ££££££££££ in a WRX

I guarantee if you got an STI in the first place you would not be thinking hmmm i wish this was slower or a bit more comfy, you'd just be having too much fun. Then eventally when you got used to the power for around £1000 if you bought good 2nd hand parts you could get yourself 340bhp without too much hassle

Anyway good luck with the hunt - let us all know how you get on!

Thanks for the comment Cocker (and good to hear from a former CTR'er too).

I understand what you are saying - it is far easier and cheaper to get an STi go over 300bhp than it would be for a WRX.

Everything that has been said points me in the direction of an STi. However, I have yet to test drive one for myself and I am just wondering whether it is going to be hard work to live with on a daily basis (comfort and mpg)? Plus there is always an option to throw £1k at it and get it even faster when I get bored of the standard power (which will eventually happen knowing me).

Comfort is no different, you will want to lower it anyhow and they both warble on motorways, mpg differences are not even worth mentioning.

I guarrantee if you buy the WRX within a month you will be wishing you bought the STi.

This is how it usually goes ... (and I mock myself in writing this as I owned a 53WRX)

1. You will buy your WRX, it will feel fast.
2. You will think, mmm, want faster.
3. You will get it remapped
4. You will think **** these brakes are crapola
5. You will buy better brakes
6. You will think MMmmm this suspension is a bit warbly
7. You will buy better suspension
8. You will think mmm my exhaust makes me look inferior
9. You will buy a bigger exhaust and ask on SNet if you need a remap
10. You will think, mmm, my car feels slow again and seeing as I now have a Blitz NurSpec maybe I should have a remap.
11. You post on scoobynet about your up coming remap and whether it’s worth decating your uppipe and fitting a fuel pump.
12. You post up about decats and MOT’s and decide to go for a 2nd hand ppp sports cat.
13. You buy various body parts, stickers and bolts ons knowing full well that you really wanted the STi but for some reason you let yourself be intimidated by the prospect of actually owning an STi.
14. You will think, mmm, my car feels slow AGAIN, perhaps I should fit an STi turbo.
15. You post up on Scoobynet as to how much power a WRX 5speed box/clutch can take.
16. You will see a Private For Sale Thread about cheap injectors
17. You will buy STi Pink injectors
18. You will get all your new expensive STi parts fitted at great expense, cursing your bank balance and the fact that you Poo poo’d the STi
19. You will get it remapped…
20. You will post your remap success praising your mapper, swearing black is white and that WRX's are just as good as STi's
21. You post a new thread on Snet 'Tastefully Modded WRX For Sale'
22. You buy an STi (Having lost £1000’s in unrecoverable mods to your WRX)

Guess where this is heading…if you have £8k to spend and you want a respectably complete Scoob, in the current used car market, buy an STi.

53wrx is talking mucho senso. Average mpg for my sti ppp is 21 round town, 25+ on mways. I actually think my standard STi suspension (upgraded to coilovers now) was a better ride than a CTR. My mrs will attest to as shes never thrown up in the STI, but once in the CTR after spirited b road drive bluuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuugh

So what do you do when you realise you want more power from a sti ?? or when you think to yourself theses standard brakes, arb and suspension are s*** ??

have you ever had a hawkeye ?? the 2.5 makes a much better car and gives loads more low down pull. i would always go for the Newer model if you can afford it. I don’t no about the older wrx but the 2.5 makes a very ast road car.

if you want to go onto bigger power then either car needs major work and therefore it doesnt matter which one you go with, thats what i am now going for? maybe 53WRX Went for the wrong type of mods to his wrx blow of valves etc rather than proper engine tuning, it expensive to go fast

hey there for your budget you could get an sti but youd be looking at an 03 sti with 60k+ on the clock id rather get an 05wrx for that money or spend the 6-7k on a 03.04 plate and the rest on getting 275bhp i wouldnt buy one modded to start with youd be asking for trouble get a standard one then mod it yourself then you know whats what with your motor ive seen some wrx blobs in wr blue for 6-7k with 30,000 on clock!

PMSL and BOVS FPMSL

£8k, simple economics...in todays climate you get more bang for buck buying an STi. And thats it. Hawkeye WRX's are completely different animals to the bug/blob budget the OP is looking at so any comparison is pointless. You won't replicate the relatively easy MY06 WRX performance gains in the earlier WRX without more budget ! But der ! if you want to talk 2.5 then the MY06 WRX's are very capable due to all the lovely torque and certainly if you can stretch to a 2.5 WRX you won't be disappointed....at least until step 4 above .

All in good humour F1 CJE UK, BOVS indeed

As a road car, the WRX is more than fast enough for blasting down A and B roads with a huge grin on your face. The brakes and suspension might be inferior to the STI set up, but they're not bad by any means and when you're not driving at the limit (ie. most of the time) then it's a great drive. If you know how to drive the car then you're not really going to miss the extra 50hp you'd have in the STI when on the road. You adjust your driving style to suit the car and get the best from it. The WRX can go very fast.

I bought my WRX because it was a bit cheaper to run, insure and maintain (still not cheap though!!). I get on average 27mpg on a run between North and South Wales and I can overtake virtually anything I want to. My corner speeds are determined by common sense (and remembering I'm on a public road and I will lose my licence if I get caught speeding) and not by the cars lack of grip. I don't think I'd do the run any faster in the STI, but it would certainly cost me more for fuel.
I still think sometimes I should have bought an STI..... it's quicker, has more power, better brakes etc, etc etc, but in reality, the WRX is a very capable car for the road.... even if the standard exhaust is a bit of a pea shooter.
