Lol frayz, i'm just glad that the turbo is now ordered and your getting somewhere.....are you going to be using standard valve stem seals or the supertech jobbies?

Edit: What did you use to polish the exhaust ports mate?

 

I used to realy enjoy lapping the valves in, just a steady plod and real pride in the finished job. Best part was not having to think about anything, just one two three etc turn on the big old 6 cylinder Mk1/2 Zepher heads.

Using Genuine OEM Subaru seals mate. Ports were cleaned using carbide burrs, 80 and 120 grit flap wheels and drums. Then finished by hand with 320 and P600 paper.
Then I have some mico mops that I used with Autosol.

I have done quite a lot of porting with 2 stroke motors mate. Intakes were left keyed, exhausts are polished.

 

Even gave the ol girl a bath today

Swirl city, but she'll get a good machine polishing once shes breathing again

 

Funking hell, look at the colour of the water in the rinse bucket You can borrow the kit whenever you want to de-swirl fella

 

I know mate. And she's only been sitting. Its amazing how filthy they get.

 

Go for a white car next. Unless really filthy they don't look dirty until you start to wash them

Frayz, i see you have now modded your signature to capture the turbo lol.

I've also carried out a bit of porting and polishing on other engines, subaru heads recently and use a secret alternative method for polishing the ports. hehe

Not a 100% but are the valve stems on the supertechs not a diff diameter to the standards? hence the need for the supertech stem seals?

Edit: I was tempted to add/repeat what i said on the other forum but as you have already owned up to it taking a lifetime to complete this one i shall bite my tongue.

 

 

Its okay mate, im used to taking the stick for it taking ages. I take it all in good fun.
Im yet to mic the stems to be honest but its something that will be done along with measuring the guides to calc the running clearances.

Im sure they will be fine to be honest.

Intersted to know what you use to polish the ports... PM if you feel like telling me

 

Interested in the mic measurements when you get a chance mate, as i'm 60%sure that there is a difference in the stem diameter. i could be wrong though.

And YHPM re what i use for polishing.

 

I can go mic a few up later mate. You know that the exhaust stems are thinner than the intakes anyway.
So if your measurements are taken on measuring 2 intake/exhaust valve stems. Then this may be the discrepancy?

 

I'm aware of that mate it's just the direct difference in the Stem diameters of oem inlet against the supertech inlet valve and the same for exhaust mate.

 

I've a few jobs to do tomorrow but I'll see if I can get a mo to mic a few up quick.

 

Baly, some numbers for you...

These were not taken in a controlled environment but as controlled as i can do at home at the moment. These will be measured properly before build in controlled conditions.

All items left to soak for 24 hours, temp at time of measurments was 22deg c.

Measurements taken @ 25mm, 35mm, and 45mm from valve tips.

I just chose cylinder #4 for the test. Stock valves are used with no coatings from a JDM sti8. Supertechs are new-unused with nitride coated intake valves. Exhausts are uncoated inconell.

All measurements in mm.

Fully V-banded Tial stainless housing. GT35R .82

Really cant believe how light this is compared to the stock housing turbos. Lets hope it works aswell as it looks. Taking it to Neil @ Thermal Logic on Sat for some pipeage.
