I didnt bother with the runout Paul, it was visible to the naked eye that the crank webs were not parallel. Then i measured the distance between the webs. On pin journal #1 the webs tapered in at the top of the by over 0.3mm.

I measured the rest and all were parallel. I know a digi vernier is not exactly accurate for the job but accurate enough to confirm my suspicions that the impact; or whatever was large enough to knock it out of true.

Here is a pic of the initial damage that i found.

As said, this was removed from a sealed bag and arrived in a completely undamaged box from Area 52. There was absolutely no fuss whatsoever when i told them of my problems. Its great to see a company taking customer care seriously for a change.

Hopefully i should have a replacement this week.
That's not good At least they are sending you a replacement quickly so you can get on with the build

As promised Area 52 delivered me a replacement crank today and a quick look shows that all is well.

Really impressed with their service and that they delivered on time without fuss.

Cant recomend them enough, Cheers Mike, Jase & Tracy

With the amount of interest this thread has generated I would've measured the thing, cleaned it and delivered it personally the same day.

Crap phone pic, but i got some time free to start stripping the engine bay tonight.

All openings are capped to prevent any contamination, all wires are zip tied and all multiplugs have been bagged and zipped to prevent any water ingress.

Still waiting on an engine crane but im off the the WRC Germany next week so it wont come out before then anyway.

But at least you can see ive done something... the bulllet has well and truely been bitten!!

If im honest, th dash out was a lot more "oh f*ck, what have i done?" than the roof vent was lol.

And the time i instructed Simpsons to make my exhaust system with a bent down 3.5" outlet... after paying a serious 4 figure price tag... that was another "oh f*ck, what have i done?" moment lol

Everyone need's a few "oh f*ck, what have i done" moments its the only way to learn sometimes

Its the "thinking outside of the box" that gets most people into trouble but then if everyone did the same thing life would be boring.
