Yes mate.

Its times like these that reputable companies really shine through and put things right without fuss that is clearly nobodys fault.

Frayz,

Is the damage on the crank visable to the eye or would it only be apparent if you had specailst measuring equipment?

I have digital verniers and thats about it - and was contenplating building a reseve engine myself.

Its visible Si, but then i measured it. It was clear enough to show up under a digital vernier and we all know thats not exactly the most accurate tool for the job.

As for the damage to the crank webs, that was quite clearly visible and had raised the surface of the surrounding material.

I can PM you some pics if youre really interested.

There are a few, but id imagine that my checks run a little deeper than normal due to the nature of my job thats all.

Picked up one of these today. Im working on getting a professional one too, but at least this allows me to get the block mounted up and start getting things going.

Could get a small interest going in rebuilds lol

Cleared some room today, gotta bite the bullet soon and start stripping the motor out of the car

I'll start by stripping most of the stock motor in the car. All parts will be photgraphed, bagged and tagged with locations and hardware.

I want to try and refurbish as may parts, bracket etc as possible so it will all be as minty mint as i can make it when it all goes back together.

Then i'll need to borrow and engine crane and have the motor out.

Remember, this is no concours car, just a one man band doing what i do.

Ready to rock

Runout on the bent crank. How bent is it? Or is the problem more of a dent, distorting a bearing journal?

You know that the 2.5 cranks are readily available from Subaru too!

Yes i know, but id rather not deal with Subaru parts depts as they never seem to know what theyre doing. Maybe you have had better luck with them than I have.

I didnt bother with the runout Paul, it was visible to the naked eye that the crank webs were not parallel. Then i measured the distance between the webs. On pin journal #1 the webs tapered in at the top of the by over 0.3mm.

I measured the rest and all were parallel. I know a digi vernier is not exactly accurate for the job but accurate enough to confirm my suspicions that the impact; or whatever was large enough to knock it out of true.

Here is a pic of the initial damage that i found.

As said, this was removed from a sealed bag and arrived in a completely undamaged box from Area 52. There was absolutely no fuss whatsoever when i told them of my problems. Its great to see a company taking customer care seriously for a change.

Hopefully i should have a replacement this week.

I can see what you mean now, including the scratched area where it was hit.

If/when we order from subaru, we use part numbers, so it's easy.

I'll try and do that in future, thanks Paul.

Gonna start stripping the stock motor this week and hopefully get it out soon.
Then build the new lump and get the heads machined for the 2.5. Wallet dependant, id like some headwork and cams too.

To mount the engine on the stand - if i recall corectly - i had to buy 4 x110mm long m10 bolts with 1mm fine threads,

so you mite want to work late at work
