I'm fortunate enough to have a largish garden for the kids to play in, but that is not always the best place as they can't ride their bikes/scooters or roller blade out there. As they are only 5 and 8 my kids generally only go out in the front when I am around, either tinkering in the garage or washing the car etc. Both my kids, despite their age, have good road sense, and I no dramas letting them make their own way to the nearest park (across2 roads).

TBH I fear more for my car on the drive than for my kids given the way people drive around my neighbourhood. The kids have the sense to get out of the way, when someone comes down the hill opposite my house too fast and loses it (as recently happened but a tree 30 yards up the road copped that one) my car is likely done for.
