Bunch of w4nkers? Worthless? For Christ's sake, these people have bothered to represent their country and have beaten the rest of the world and you put them down! Go on then **** head, you go and win a medal if it's so bleedin easy! Athleticism doesn't really enter into to. People at the top of their sport are supremely talented, far more than you ever will be.

Timo Salonen was hardly an example of the athletic sort, but I bet ouy'd be impressed if you went in the car with him.

What about Darts players? Mainly fat chain smokers, but to throw consistently accurately like that under pressure requires skills you could only dream of.

The curling team deserve their medal but moreimportantly they deserve the respect of fcukwits like yourselves because they actually went and did something instead of just criticising without foundation

Rant off

I'm British...to the core, infact I have, in the past been accused of being too British, too partisan. I love my country for everything about it.
My first coupla posts on page one were extremely tongue-in-cheek hence the smilies...I got a rise from people so I carried on the posting.
I called them w4nkers, yes, but I did not abuse the bbs by beating the profanity filter which I could have. If this has offended you then I apologise. I will however disagree that I am a disgrace to myself and the bbs.
Geezer - before calling me a fcukwit and telling me to do something please note the following:
I represented Great Britain in the Sailing World Championships and was in the British Squad for kayaking when I was younger...I only missed out on being in the team due to a back injury following a car crash. This is something that I will regret missing out on forever.
Hope this clears things up a bit better - if not mail me and I'll explain.

Richard,
Then you truly should appreciate the skill level that these people have. Compared to certain discplines, people who sail would be considered to non atheletes, but you know better than that obviously from what you have said.

Like I said, all top sportspeople are very talented and deserve the accolades thay get. Don't begrudge them it because you cannot/did not make it and think their sport should get less recognition than yours.

It is also unbecoming of a moderator to make such comments when you are supposed to discourage that sort of ireverant sort of ranting.

you're right to praise these individuals for the committment/ honour they deserve etc

however, the issue here is whether they really are athletes or not - the olympics should be about demonstrating true athletic prowess. curling is not the only sport that does not fit this criteria IMO. I agree darts players are very focused and have a skill most of us could not match (and they can play darts) but it should never be an olympic sport. a fat bloke who spends a lot of time in the pub and is good at darts hardly fits with the ethos of the olympics.

there are a number of sports in the olympics that are also questionable due to the subjective nature of the judging (the ice skating and snowboarding are classic examples of this).

bottom line is we're all chuffed to have a gold medal (Scottish or British) but you have to admit it feels a lot less satisfying than if we'd won it in the cross country skiing or downhill etc.

I await the emotive responses.....

Whether you agree or disagree about what should be in the olympics.
The summer olympics has more 'unathletic' competitors than the winter olympics.
Surely winning a gold medal deserves praise, be it athletic or not
!
When GB win a medal we should all be chuffed coz we stuck it up em !

Well I'm glad I started this thread now, and I'm so pleased for the supportive comments for the team.

Curling is not exactly the most exciting of sports for the spectator who does not have an active interest in it, but the fact of the matter is 6 million people watched it last night, rather more than the official audience of zero that ITV sport have managed for some of their football games.

However I'm sure that those of us that did watch it found it extremely compelling viewing, at least in the latter stages.

Richard Askew, I am particularly disappointed in your comments, I am surprised that having been involved in a sport such as sailing you are not more sympathetic to a marginal sport. FYI, the team were on the ice for 36 hours to win their medal. As has aleady been stated, the manner of some of your comments is ill-fiting of a moderator of this site.

There are all manner of "sports" that the Olympics recognises that some find dubious, ranging from the Ice Dance that has already cause controversy in these games through to the infamous Synchronised Swimming.

That I would have thought is worthy of a separate debate, for now, can't we just be happy for those girls in Salt Lake city?

Simes - good thread indeed, and agree with all the positive comments coming through finally.

There are 15,000 registered curlers in the UK, and roughly the same estimated to play on a casual basis*. How many people compete in rowing for example, and yet look how we all got behind our rowers at the last games. That was the last time I stayed up late for a sporting event, and both gave a "proud to be British" feeling. Not much does that these days.

*Majority of these 30,000 curlers are north of the border.

To put their win into perspective, here's our previous gold medals from winter olympics:

Ice hockey, 1936
Jeanette Altweg, fig. skating, 1952
Tony Nash & Robin Dixon, 2 man bob, 1964
John Curry, fig. skating, 1976
Robin Cousins, fig. skating, 1980
Jane Torvill & Christopher Dean, fig. skating, 1984

Not exactly coming thick and fast are they?

Rhona Martin will carry the flag for us at the closing ceremony. Well done, I think they've earned it.

Mike.

Mike, thanks for those words.

FYI I have curled, albeit when I was a child on the family skiing holiday in Scotland, probably tells you how long ago that was as we were going to Scotland

I may as well at least lighten things up a bit by claiming a corner

Agree with the other positive comments - the girls did good for Britain (okay, Scotland ), whatever your views on how valid a sport curling is.

To be at the top of your field, whether it be a sport, discipline, job etc...is something that the people that acheive it should be immensely pround of - and others should credit them with respect.

It may not be the most athletic of disciplines, but what it lacks in that department it makes up in others - tactics, mental strength, teamwork, skill and (as we saw with the last stone) nerve for example.

I am not a curling fan at all - I watched it for about 5 mins the other day and (wrongly) dismissed it. But I watched it the other night mainly cos our girls were in it - only then did I realise the skill and strategy involved.Certainly not my cup of tea, but I can appreciate it.

So,well done girls, wear those medals with pride when you get back!!

Gordo,

I appreciate your comments and agree with what you are trying to say, but my issue was not so much the athletic-non athletic debate, but the 'hope they are satisfied with their 15mins of fame/*******' quote.

I still think people are very ready to say "Yes, we won a Gold but....."

Why not "Yes we won a Gold"?

It's almost as if we need to quantify why we are non-achieving, even when we manage to climb to the very top.

They are few and far between as someone has already pointed out, so I think we should celebrate and not deliberate.

Fair 'nough Blubs, and I agree they should be praised.

The chap who won the bronze in the slalom is much more worthy in my opinion though!

We ecstatic over one gold and a gold in curling?????

I sat with some american friends and felt really embarrassed at our *achievement*

Actually, GB should be replaced by Scotland so they can rightly, solely take the glory! GB also got a bronze in the men's downhill slalom IIRC, sorry Scotland did
