If it reduces the nagging then that's reason enough

I still reckon Freeview and satellite boxes (esp. PVRs with hard discs in them spinning all the time) are much, much worse - they're actually on and working 100% of the time. (nb. when I say 'reckon', I mean 'have actually measured').

There's also a correlation between price and energy wastage, cheap products have very, very cheap power supplies that run hot. My DVD recorder is terrible for this

I'm a bit better behaved now,

Only things that are kept plugged in at night is my PC as it's bloody annoying waiting for vista to start up

Again with the nagging, she has her bloody stupid pointless plug-in scent things turned On and plugged in ALL day, talk about wasting!

Funny that, I find it more annoying once it has started up

I've heard those things are bad for starting fires, I wouldn't have one in my house!

Not heard of hibernation then? I hibernate mine and switch off at the wall (the power supply still consumes power even when the PC has been hibernated). Resumes and is fully usable again within 20 seconds of switching it on.

The g/f's sister was involved with some big study recently about stand by power and it was a very interesting read. On the whole most products from recent times, less than a few years old, tend to be quite good in stand by.

Older stuff can be worse though. IIRC the items that were at the top of her list were ones with a seperate power supply thats "always on" so to speak and even in stand by they are consuming power. Cant remember what the outcome was, I think it went along the lines of - we all need to go back to living in caves and take up hunting for a living. Sumink like that!

i have most of my devices on small timers so after 1.45am they switch off at the wall anyway completely, tv, xbox, microwave, etc etc etc

saves arseing about behind the appliance when we go to bed, and not once have i thought "ohh i wish the power was on" at 2:01am

the tv lot come back on at 6.45am, microwave comes on around 11am

made a reasonable amount of difference to the bills as well

This is just the start of "carbon" stupidity. Watch out for when your "food miles" start attracting (Already do) big taxes.

Yea we have a few plug racks which turn off individually the things plugged in that aren't being used for a certain time. Although to be honest I've switched that option to "off" and used them all as extension racks lol

Timer switches are infamous for starting fires, and a fire will be a damn site more expensive than the stand-by power used, and produce significantly more carbon.

I'm sick to the back teeth of the Green stuff and the EU.

How do you rebel though?

This must have been the worst ten years of government legislation wise and EU based legislation.I think a hell of a lot of it has been incredibly damaging to the economy.

The only people who have benefitted are people who buy a white van and call their company 'Eco clean' or 'Eco plumbing'.Even our local bus company think we must be daft.Painting their double deckers green and calling them 'green buses'.I'm sure the new livery has made them uber green

Total rip off this eco stuff and everyone jumping on the bandwagon

I've said for years that there's a secret interrogation room at the last services inbound to London, and all politicians are dragged in kicking and screaming on their first trip after being elected. If they don't succumb to being a lying, sleazy, nest feathering, big business pandering, cheat then they are turned around and sent back to their constituency to languish the rest of their career in petty local authorities. Let's face it, an MP's salary is peanuts compared to what they'll earn as executive directors (ie not actually working for but being on the executive list) for multi-national companies once they leave office, and the back-handers they'll acquire whilst in office. All us tw@ts mean nothing to them !

First bused round here are cutting their emmisons. They've upped their prices again by well over inflation, to put people off using them and therefore forcing them to keep stop / starting, and they cut services again to keep buses off the road.
You have to admire the dedication of the theiving scumbags

In the specifications, My Sony 42" Plasma is stated to use 300W when running and about 3W on standby.

I smell daily mail BS: I just checked the online manuals and a 42" LG plasma was rated at 380watts and a 37" LG LCD is 265watts.

So 115watts between like for like LCD vs Plasma. Wow.

Especially when one can get an A/V amp that has 550watts on the rear power sticker (by the socket), not to forget the 200watt active subwoofer. So I kind of think the TV is the irrelevant.

Next they'll ban 3000watt fast boil kettles forcing us to use 1500watt ones again.

You should stock these:

Tubular Clusterlite 100w GES Warm White E40 HC01100i (WW) [874611] - £36.74 : Lamps by Post, For all your lighting needs.

They are energy saving They also do a 300watt version.

I'd love to fit a load of those around the house and then invite a liberal eco-greeny round to show him my formidable efforts by replacing all my conventional light bulbs for energy efficient bulbs

You wouldn't turn up to an earthquake with a dust pan and brush, so why bother even changing your energy use in the face of China/India/US's growing consumption?
