This was just a device to counteract the tendency of young writers to write like this:

I had a birthday party. And all my friends came. And I got lots of presents. And Philip was sick. And Jeremy won dead lions but it wasn't fair because he moved loads. And I should have won because it was my party.

It's not autobiographical.

What sort of parties did you go to as a child, where deceased members of the large cat family were given away as party game prizes?

I think thst "textspeak" is fine when used where it was designed to be-that is to say on telephones. I don't think it should ever be sustituted where the use of English is required.

I support the English language and want to see it preserved as far as possible. It is certainly a shame to see it being destroyed in normal communications.

I would never support "textspeak" on this forum.

What you said^

So far phone conversations are concerned, text speak is acceptable IMO. Text speak for phones bears a logic. Every text is meant to be no more than 60 characters, I think. Character means letters, smileys, Xs etc. Every text costs a certain amount of pennies. Young students and even working adults try to save time and money in writing lengthy texts, and expect other party to work out what they are saying by M8, and L8R kind of language. As long as its understandable, IMO its fine on phones. I dislike texting, I'd rather talk instead. So, when I have to text, It will be short and sweet with U for you, and soz for sorry. I still remain confident that it doesn't make me "feel" or "look" like an uneducated person, just because I have saved hassle in pinning full words in.

In forums like this and others, text language is not necessary at all. Standards can be maintained by using the language as normal. Its not a rocket science, really. Spell-check is also available for people with difficulties. Just like Leslie, I am a strong supporter of preserving languages. I don't even like wrong spellings, but I myself am not exactly some Wordsworth or William Blake , so I keep my mouth shut on that.

I don't see so much of text speak here. If I do, I just can't be bothered reading and understanding it. If we all do that, text speak users will soon get the message, and make necessary changes to get some attention and response to their posts.

It's not the end of the world when someone's literary skills are wanting but bear in mind it's a portrayal of your character on here. It's all we can use to distinguish one another. The English language is a wonderful tool for expression and communication, use it or lose it!

Just the correct English doesn't weave a character. Quality and contents of the posts matter too, even when they are written backwards But the defiance against learning and making amendments should be kicked in the butt

U is the chemical symbol for Uranium, Ur is an ancient city, M8 is a motorway that links Glasgow and Edinburgh and Gr8 is just an abomination.

Me and Tel (or should that be Tel and I) don't always see eye to eye, but I for one, would agree whole heartedly with his sentiment here. Basic grammar is not hard, though I would in no way pull someone for using/spelling the wrong words (I just cringe inwardly to myself).

Read Eats, Shoots and Leaves by Lynn Truss of you want to see a real pedant at work.

I dont care how its spelt, or if its text speak, or if its gramatically correct so long as I can understand it.

I get regular texts from my 16YO niece and I cant make head nor tail of them.....

The last one I got is in my phone and reads...

Iya yz OK can u pk me up @ mcds lpool 9bels menmts l8r gud gud lu x

Do they think they get charged less for using less letters?

PS. I read the text and understood it, other than the fact that she had mates with her..."me and my mates" = "menmts"

I think they know that they get charged per text, and a text consists of maximum 60 letters/symbols/digits (or something like that). But even if a text contained one word, they'd shrink it for their convenience. It has become a norm now, their brains are now conditined to shrink the words on MSN and texts. My 16 year old daughter does it too. Her texts aren't as challenging as your niece's are Use of text speak on phone and MSN hardly effects her competence in English elsewhere. She is one of the best students in her Sixth Form with English, French and Politics as her chosen subjects.
