Even if it did come in (against a public backlash I guess) then it would be fairly easy to "turn off". A black market would appear for this as soon as it went live IMHO.

On the contrary it will surely benfit sports car owners. The only place to overtake is as you pull away from a junction / traffic lights, because once the cars are at the speed limit, no-one will be able to pass. Therefore the fastest accelerating cars will be the quickest A to B.

A few thoughts I posted on 15/2/05:

1. You are in a 60mph limit overtaking a lorry which is only doing 40. Up ahead is a 40 limit so the system starts to slow you down. You are now alongside a lorry both doing 40, safe?, I don't think so. So you decide to brake, but the car behind has now caught up with the lorry and you have nowhere to go.

2. You are in a 60. A tree has fallen across the road. But you don't need to concentrate because your car cannot exceed the limit and so must be safe. CRASH!

3. If all vehicles were controlled then the feeling would be that if an overtake was dangerous that the system would not let you pull out. Therefore if it lets you pull out it must be safe. Pity the poor pedestrians.

4. Any, and I mean any, malfunction would have very serious consequences. Cars where the regulator malfunctioned overtaking everyone else. Cars limited to an artificially slow speed. Cars that max out at 30mph trying to get past buses as they pull away from the kerb. Cars at 30 overtaking tractors at 25.

5. The cost

6. The consequences if your install fails, not allowed out until its fixed?

Driving down the m4 yesterday... like i do a lot.
GPS/sat nav bleeps to tell me its a 50 zone for roadworks- which have been there for the past few weeks but have ended, and cones removed and lanes back to normal. Yet its still telling me 50 zone.... as it hasnt been updated...

Oh dear is that a transit in my tailgate where the system slowed me down to 50 in a 70?

I see your point but we all know how little time it takes for a scoob to get to 30/40 mph so I cant see the point of owning a 350bhp car and paying for everything that comes with it for a couple of seconds fun every now and again. What would be the point in buying a standard car then spending a couple of grand on it for another 100bhp if you only use it to get ahead at some traffic lights? Pointless IMO.

I agree with your other points though
