Jimmy - do NOT get an X3. Universally hated and BMWs worst car for many years.
Either go for the Volvo (a decent car) or an older X5.

For any peasants here, the Jimny is now almost free to buy new
While I got laughed off the board a while back for getting one, it's turned out to be a brilliant little machine.
Yes it looks gay (especially in bright blue softop like we have) but it's totally indestructable, will go anywhere a Defender will go, can be parked almost in Smart car style (it's SO short), has an interior that can be horribly abused, costs naff all to run and can even be fun on the road in a low powered RWD (4WD is switchable and it has proper low range gears) kind of way. There just enough oomph to play with the back end a tiny bit. Oh and it has heated mirrors and it quite well specced.

A surprising number of farmers who are narked with the reliability and thirst of Defenders down here have switched to them - although I still like the Defender a lot!

Okay, coat on, I'm running away...

Around 13 - 15 MPG around town but i've seen around 22 MPG on a run.

I think it's like most prestige type cars find yourself a good independent specialist and you'll save yourself a fortune.

The engine is bullut proof as it's been around for year's in the supercharged XK8 Jaguars

Pah, an sj413 is where it's at. Got mine 4 years ago for £1.5k with 33k miles. Cost me pennies over that time, £120 road tax. Done 37k now, flies through every MOT, not bad for something 17 years old

Biggest thing I've spent on is a £50 hard top. It's in such good nick I'd expect it to be still worth over a grand

Impressive stuff! Bodes well for the Jimny then - basically the same car with a couple more luxuries (relatively speaking) and a bit more roll proofing!

If you can afford it, why not?

Plenty of us can "afford" it but I think it's daft.
In fact if you need to get a contract lease/loan, you probably can't really afford it.

What a ridiculous statement. How people chose to finance their choice of vehicle depends on their own circumstances and whether they're prepared to take the hit of significant depreciation or not. As such, there isn't a 'one size fits all' financial product that is applicable to all circumstances.

Fine but I think it's a silly time to take out a £585pcm loan for anything.
You can afford that much, I can "afford" that much but it could easily be different in six months or a years time.

If I wanted an X5, I'd pay for it in cash outright. But I don't. So I won't.
It's massive loans like the above that have landed the country in deep merde.

Just to lighten things up

Saw a Ford Kuga for the first time today. Looked a smart 4x4 with good economy. Not seen one sensibly priced on Autotrader, so I'd imagine you'd get one with a hefty discount with good finance. Probably not the drug dealer image you're after though

I like the Kuga rather a lot.
In fact I like the Fiesta, Focus and Mondeo too. Really hope Ford don't sink.

You can't possibly know what other people's circumstances are to make that judgement and its also been those massive loans that has enabled the economy to do so well over the last few years so its a double edged sword.

You've also failed to take into account capex, taxation and borrowing rates that also form part of the equation.

Who in their right mind would pay for an X5 in cash outright unless you have millions - with the market at the moment you woudln't invest / waste that much cash in a lump of metal - regardless !!

With car allowances budgets etc - i agree £585 is to much for to pay for a 2nd hand X5 that will plummitt in value !! Its not about affording it - its more a case of is it really worth that amount per month and the answer is NO

Looks like we'll be talking out a personal lease instead

Christ man, If we all thought like that then none of us would splash out on a telly, car, house, holiday, computer, jazz mag etc. just in case, in 6 months or a years time, things go **** up!

No point being the richest man in the graveyard.
Like you and many others, I've also lost a child and it certainly taught me to enjoy my life.

Sorry to hear that zip (losing a child).
I think there's a balance between splurging money for no reason and enjoying life. However if buying a jazz mag cripples anyone, things are a bit desperate!

Really don't like the X5

Apart from the fact its a BMW, TG are correct to say driven by *****!

Friends have an X5 and its cramped inside with a small boot. A tardis in reverse as it looks big from the outside.
Friends would rather have a Pathfinder as they can get 2 big teenagers and a big child seat in the back but its too cramped in the X5.

Sister has the XC90 and cannot fault it. Lovely motor to own and drive.

I dont understand why anyone would want to own a x5 they are one of the worst out there along with the rr sport both d1ck heads cars imo.
If you feel/ have the need to drive a large 4x4 in that "class" then the land cruiser amazon is the choice of those in the know..
