Why can't people understand the most basic of right and wrong though?

They are either mentally ill or brutal sadistic killers.I guess the second one.

I am sure there are millions of people who have had traumatic events occur to them,be it abuse or whatever and did not decide to take it out on an innocent baby.

Ted,none of this is aimed at you of course,I understand your position and what you are saying.I just think things like this are so behond comprehension and, like you I am having difficulty getting the little snippets I have read out of my head

Ted, my comments were aimed squarely at Martin2005.

His post made me sick to my stomach to think that somehow the people who perportrated the crime were not to be held accountable, that we should put our arm over their collective shoulder and give them a big kiss goodnight.

Shameful attitude and you should right now be totally disgusted at yourself.

To Ted, an alternative thought for you...
if we execute these monsters then this cycle has stopped, if we do nothing other than incarcerate then we delay the same fate happening again.

For the record, I cannot condone capital punishment. While a cut n dry case such as this seems to cry out for it, I am a Roman Catholic and the right to life (or to end it) lies with the creator, it is also a detterent that has failed to work over the pond as the scores of death rowers proves.
Regardless of theology however, and on a more practical level: if there is even one shred of doubt then the death sentence cannot be passed, what if we get it wrong? What about convictions from way back that have been reviewed and overturned in light of new evidence? We would not be able to do this if capital punishment had been passed down.

you use the words rights, responsibility, cuddles, fault etc but I mention none of these. I just feel sad that these cycles of abuse are occuring. perhaps they should be executed. people are too looked after, given a free ride, talked to and supported instead of being punished, you'll find I agree with you. It's just that why couldn't we get to break this cycle somehow earlier rather than it getting to this stage? I find that by reaching this stage we have failed somehow.
Got you. I think you've answered your own question in that case. The protection of the rights of the criminal over the rights of the victim are the root cause of this it think.

There is always a reason, an excuse it isn't the person's fault. this has always been the case of course, people have always blamed whatever reason for their own misfortune but now they are allowed to get away with it and are even allowed to indulge in their excess without consequence.

Peanuts - the "what if it was wrong.." argument is one that has been used time and time again. It is the reason the death penalty isn't for all and one of the main objections i have to it. That said, is it worth keeping people like Huntly, Rose West etc etc alive at great expense for no real reason? It is the reason it promots so much debate.

As for not working that might be right but regular prison doesn't either. Not sure if you watched the piece on America's toughest sheriff, with his prison made of tents, chain gangs clearing up litter and basic food that people complain is breakign the rights of the prisoners. They argue he offers no education facilities and say the regime fails because reoffending rates are the same as other prisons with art classes and exercise gyms in. He says it shows that some people just like crime and unless they want to stop offending i.e. make that choice and take responsibility they won't. He gets the same results but spends millions less to do it. He has got a point.

I might be missing something but it says

"The boyfriend will be sentenced for rape and for causing or allowing Baby P's death in August 2007. Baby P's mother and lodger Jason Owen will also be sentenced."

er... what?

Cases like this take a long time to come to court. The CPS need to build the case etc and sometimes lengthy delays do happen. The wheels of justice do turn very slowly sometimes but in order to secure a conviction that is not necessarily a bad thing-especially in these kind of cases.

May he rot for what he did.
