Be warned, if you do go for this you need to know what you are doing as big birds are a lot stronger than you may think.
You are not going to be strong enough to snap its neck trust me on this one, they have quite a lot of muscle on them and the best way is to use a block and an axe, a nice clean cut right through the neck (i.e head chopped off) with a good sharp axe. Then have something to catch the blood... also, it will do the chicken dance for a good 30 seconds.. so hang on. Its a 2 person job. Its quick and fairly humane.

The spring is too early to get them assuming you have a conventional sized oven. Mine comes from a local farmer who gets them in on the first of August and kills them early December. Last year he had issues that they were getting too big 36lbs was the largest and you don't get that in most ovens.
If you ask your vet please post up the answer it'll be funny. Turkeys that are professionally killed are stunned then have their throats cut while they are unconcious. Mine that comes from the local guy does get its neck broken but they are experienced at doing it and its definitely not something to try with no experience. As said ask your local butcher or whoever you buy the turkeys from for advice.

That's how I saw it done on the telly, can't remember if it was on Gordon Ramsey or Huge Furry Whittingstall. Seem to remember they had a bloke come in a van to do it. Hung the bird from its legs upside down, shoved an electrode in its gob, zapped it with several thousand volts, then slit its neck and let it bleed. All over in thirty seconds.

i have phoned my vet and spoke to a lady that used to have a farm, she is Australian.
firstly i cannot gas or have the turkey 'put to sleep' as this would contaminate the meat, i didn't think about this
she said to wrap the bird in a sheet and the other person chops the head of.
it doesn't matter where on the neck this happens but if you strangle it you need to do it in the right place. i suppose its a bit like choking a giraffe
she told me she would do it herself for me but she wouldnt be allowed to.
she only sounded young, girls rock

MmmmMmmm, I love duck
I had loads of pet ducks when I was a kid, never killed and ate any though. I remember one of the dopey things accidentally killed itself by impaling itself on some sharp wire that had come loose on a fence, I was gutted. Poor wee Oscar
Well, good luck whatever you decide to go with

i am getting some chickens (for the eggs)in the spring and fancied the idea of getting a turkey and eating it at xmas. the only thing is, who do i get to kill it for me?
don't say its easy to kill a turkey yourself because i want it done painlessly and properly, would i take it to the vets?
its just an idea at this stage, i don't know if its practical growing a turkey yourself

Wouldn't have a problem with that now though
I think you'll appreciate the food much more if you've done everything from start to finish anyway, quite rewarding
