Sorry to hear about this Daz; I know from reading your thread how much work you put into this car!
Still, chin up: excuse to rebuild it to an even better spec!!

Hey Daz,
Have spent nigh on 3-4 hours reading through this epic and brilliant in-depth project build guide! and i can't believe that you have achieved such a professional finish and spec form using your driveway/garage! absolutely epic! :-D
My hat sir goes off too you!
Don't let this setback get you down, think of the bigger picture.... (600bhp car!!) that'll get you through!
You have encouraged me, and probably many others too learn about there car's and have a dab hand go with the spanners.
???? Just out of curiousity what engine building/mechanics background did you have prior too this project?
Once again hats off ;-)

Cheers for the comments fellas.
I'm going to rebuild it, that I am certain about.
As for my mechanics background I dont have one lol. The biggest job I'd done prior to this subaru stuff was an inlet manifold gasket on a 2.8i Capri in my youth.
With regard to the failure itself it looks as though it's simply a materials failure.
I've stripped the heads which has proved interesting.
Firstly, only valves from one cylinder are damaged. The other 12 are in perfect condition and are all straight.
I have a theory in that one of the inlet valves simply failed. I've drawn this conclusion because of the the fact that one of the stems where te head has broken seems too straight and too much of a clean cut for it to have broken to a bend.
The stem of this particular valve is also straighter than the rest of the damaged ones. The other damaged ones have more severe bends in them but the valve is still attached.
Pictures speak a thousand words as they say.
These are the damaged valves:
Note the straighter stem with the cleaner break

Broken Exhaust valve head

Inlet valve with suspiciously straight break

Compare it to the broken exhaust valve head.

Broken exhaust valve stem

You'll see what I mean about the straight break in this next picture.

I've sourced some new heads which I'll be collecting shortly and the rebuild will commence soon.

Same heads but ported and polished going to reuse my current double springs and titanium retainers. I'll replace the valves (probably going to use Ferrea Valves) with bronze valve guides and some Cosworth Cams to make it breath better and reduce cylinder pressure.
Sorry to hear about that. I think I'd cry after all that time, work and money. Would it be worth getting the valves inspected with a view to some compensation from the manufacturer or were they the valves that came with the heads, ie standard from when the heads were new?
The valves were Supertec valves which ironically I bought for strength and relibility lol
I'm going to send them off to get inspected. If fault is found then i shall be taking it up with the manufacturer.

Sounds good Daz. Lets hope my Supertechs are okay. Not heard of any previously failing as they have a reputation for high quality.
Hope the Ferreas are more reliable for you mate

epic thread cant believe it finished like it has
made the last 3 hrs at work go very fast lol
p.s i know of 3 people that have had a supertech valves fail exactly the same as that but in 1.8t. all have now moved over to ferrea valve train and have had no issues so far all in 450+ engines up to near 600bhp

Sent them some pictures at the beginning of the project and told them it was a home brew build. They were interested from the off
I never expected the cover though So I'm well pleased with that.

imo you are one of few who actually deserve a mag feature

I loved how it drove as a 2.5 so I'm going to rebuild it. The only difference this time round will be ported and polished heads and a set of Cosworth cams oh and a different brand of valves. i.e not Supertec
congratulations on the cover daz also on the build, look forward to getting my copy in the post
good luck with the rebuild to sound like its going be even more of a hand full
