Fastest Car you have ever tried to keep up with?
Bright Orange Maclaren F1 GT - tried, but sadly failed. I was going along the A5 in my Abbot Racing Saab 900 Aero in convoy with a 300ZX. We were quite happily overtaking between 5-10 cars at a time. Every time I pulled out to overtake I noticed a set of light flash in my mirror. Whatever it was was gaining at a hell of a rate. When I over took 5, he'd get 10. He caught up and pulled in behind me. Next gap I went to pull out only for him to flash and off he went. Tried to follow him but didn't stand a chance. Nice little air brake they have. Nice (and appropriate) number plate - F1BYE.
dsmith - I thought you were taking the p$ss
....I'm sure you can appreciate my mis-understanding
I don't personally know anyone who would reply to a "kept up with a 911" type thread, with a "raced a Tornado with a Bulldog" reply....anyway I thought you didn't race?? is racing aeroplanes different to racing cars

Anyway I can see you have had a bit of a career change, looking at your profile, "budding young pilot to network engineer"
How do you cope with the exitement I.T. dishes-out daily compared to your death-defying perils of the sky

I did "try and keep up with" someone on a large looking bike when in my old Civic VTi. Fortunately he had someone on the back which seemed to be hampering is ability to get away. I backed off when said bloke on the back nearly came off on one of the bikes upchanges

lol @ dsmith - btw, what about towing me in one of said planes (can you borrow a Tornado), then I could go for the quickest 0-60 in a UK scoob

( after-burners would probably give me a one-off paint job as well
)

they may be heavy but as standard they are 380/390 bhp, 4.9 sec 0-60mpg, 11secs 0-100mph
. It blitzed my proven 240+bhp WRX.

TVR Tuscan....never never never attempt, left me standing when I was on full boost!Only had to laugh as he hit a bump and went airborne for a few seconds just as he overtook, and the look on his face was priceless, from pure smug to terror in a nanosecond...grin!
tried against a guy at work's chimera (only 4litre one), before I had it chipped....I got murdered
didn't bother trying after chip as still would get hammered
mind you I did offer to come & pick him up every week from the hard shoulder instead of waiting for RAC

Ah yes the fek i wish i had a faster car thread. this i can deal with !!
I was testing the rev limiter in 5th down the M25 at 2.30am, just as you start comming down hill through the twisty S bend bit (well twisty for a motorway) and i see this set of headlights comming up behind me ....gaining on me.....but know this is now three headlights and seconds later a 355 berlineta (spelling ??)side by side with an old GSXR 1100, came flying past my already substantial speed...fekking awsome sound from the two...
I kept it pinned and stayed a few miles behind them, luckily enough they decided to ease off again so that i could play for a while, before buggering off into faint red dot's, recommend it to anyone he gets the chance.

Interesting to be on each side of the "keeping up with" fence.
I hate that feeling of seeing the car infront out-accelerate you, even if it only manages to ease away fairly slowly it still makes your car feel like it is as slow as ****. But when you are the guy doing the easing away it feels embarrassing that it is not a dramatic pulling out of distance from the follower, especially if your car is meant to be superior on paper.
Although some sanctimonious types will dissapprove, I think there is not much more fun to be had with your clothes on than a drag race with another car on public roads, track days are fun but there's no sense of illicit thrill, and you lose the essential unpredictability of when your next road-race will be.
(I guess the ultimte thrill would be to take your clothes off and have a drag race on the road, girlfriend in passenger seat.

Wasn't it Jeremy Clarkson that said in W%$k Power that the ultimate thrill would be 150mph, with the roof down an 18yr old girl with her head in you lap and a nose full of coke ....
Or have I fallen asleep at my PC again !!
Obviously I don't condon this sort of behaviour....

iii)There was a disclaimer at the end - I DO NOT CONDON THIS BEHAVIOUR !
and lastly, I find it strainge that I an branded a '********' due to one post, when generally my posts are informative and recounting genuine stories...

you suggest i feel a moral superiority over you?
my morals lead me to conclude that a drag race on the road to seek thrills is the action of a ****.
so yes, it would seem you are correct. i do feel a moral superiotity- well spotted.
perhaps you should examine your own post rather than mine though?

I had a "run" against a Porker GT3 2nite on the way home from work tonight
Bugger was 3 cars behind me, I could tell he was trying to get behind me to blat past....he got behind me....about 200 yds behind me and there he stayed
Didn't make ANY ground on me whatsoever
up to "cough" mph round a nice sweeping left hander
and I even had a nice pop changing into 3rd gear so I'm hoping I spat a flame at him in the process
Don't ya just love it when that happens

J Kay & two of his mates and all their stuff in a Black RS4 coming back from Le-Mans last year.
I was in my 89 911. I joined the A10 and booted it, indicated 150mph with the roof off when I noticed this 'Thing' catching me V Quick. He went past me and I tried to keep up. He never got out of sight, but had so much more grunt. It was amazing how he could just clear off at 160+ whenever he pleased, and the noise that thing made was awesome.
We did 200kms together and never went under 140, it was only at the toll when he stuck his head out of the window shouting "Way Hay F*cking brilliant roads aren't they!" I realised who it was.

Mr Barnes....
Totally in agreement !
The act of driving a fast car such as a Subaru on a Public Rd is generally breaking the law...
When we are discussing not being able to keep up with a car such as the Scoob ... then you WILL break the law 100% of the time...
Now whether this directly involves getting an illicit thrill or not - the nature of what you are doing, is going to involve getting an adrenelin rush and a 'thrill' !

Tiggs,
I do not understand, why on this BBS everyone has to take the moral high ground !
This is an open discussion on cars that we have tried to keep up with, and not suceeded... the very nature of that is breaking the law and yes driving dangerously...
I cannot believe that just becuase one person suggests that he gets a thrill from driving quickly ... Then suddenly he is a danger to himself and the publc on the road..
If people get so outraged, to the point of insulting others when the comments that have SO upset are in the vein of the thread ... Then can I suggest that the thread is not read !!!
And I for one NEVER get a raise in my heart rate when driving quickly on a public road..
HMMMMMMMMMM...

paul,
"everyone takes the moral high ground"
do they? not on this thread- the ratio of "look how fast i am" to "some of you are taking like *****" seems very low. in fact its fair to say that bearing in mind the topic it seems to have got off lightly.
this is an open forum and you can not ecpect to have someone post something like:
"Although some sanctimonious types will dissapprove, I think there is not much more fun to be had with your clothes on than a drag race with another car on public roads, track days are fun but there's no sense of illicit thrill, and you lose the essential unpredictability of when your next road-race will be."
and not get at least one person (and today thats me) who says "hang on this person seems worthy of being called a ********".
perhaps an- IMHO- needs to be added although i doubt it, i post on here as me and not on behalf of the world so its safe to assume all of this is my opinion anyway.
so there you go, if you dont like it post in a community where the majority are bound to approve of such things, this is a BBS where someone has posted about a newborn child in General! hardly seems the sort of community where threads like this will go unchallenged.

Tiggs,
I think we shall have to agree to disagree..
As a relative newcomer on this thread, I do find it interesting and informative, I hope to meet up with you guys pretty soon and shake hands and smile over a beer...
However a Subaru is a PERFORMANCE car and is expected to be driven quickly !
To seek out a race on the public rd is not responsible, however we do have to face the facts that if challenged it happens... and if challenged the majority of us will respond ..
Anyhow - did I mention the one with the M3 .......
Regards,
Paul

"I think we shall have to agree to disagree.."
theres a sensible response not normally seen on here!
although im not quite sure what we disagree on, my only real issue was with the quote i included in my last post- i'd be surpised if many people wanted to agree with that?
maybe im way off and its the norm? hope not.

Funny how these things can turn but here's my 2p worth (groan)
There is a time and a place, when the roads are clear and are likely to be clear then perhaps finding one's driving limits will actually increase our driving skill and allow us to be safer drivers, as we have a better understanding of what our vehicle is likely to do in a given situation.
The more situations the more experience, and so on. I do not condone street racing, or speeding in any built up area however why have a dog and bark yourself, if you have the power you will use it and if you dont like it, buy an electric car, "greener" too !!!
Keep it cool everbody, relax, cadburys caramel hmmmmm
