Hi

A 5w-40 is ideal.

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-656-5w-40.aspx

Out of those, the best ones are the Fuchs/Silkolene Pro S, Millers CFS/CFS NT, Motul 300V, Redline and Gulf Competition. The Motul 8100 X-Cess, Millers XF Longlife, Fuchs GT1 XTL/Supersyn, Gulf Formula G, Shell Helix and Mobil Super 3000 are good, cheaper alternatives.

Cheers

Tim

Hello Oilman.
I have a 1994 WRX Impreza. Not really modified, it has an induction kit and dump valve. I use it for a bit of fast road and regular car use. The thing with me is that I live in the Alpes and the temperatures are pretty extreme. Down to minus 20 in winter on occasions, usually around 0 to +3 degrees. And up to 30 odd degrees in summer. Do you have any recommendations for me on that front? I don't know what oil is currently in it. Thanks in advance!!

With extreme (Cold) temperatures it's important that you use an oil that flows well in cold conditions which is the "w" number in oil specs and the lower the better. So for example a 5w-40 will be better for you than a 10w-40 due to its better cold crank/flow properties.

I would stay clear of 15w oils and use a 5w as a preference over 10w so a 5w-40 would be ideal for you.

Thanks man. I'm guessing that this oil you're recommending me is for use in the winter, not the summer. Would you say a 10W-40 for summertime use? Also, would you go synthetic or something else?
Cheers, Richie.

5w-40 synthetic all year round unless the car is extremely modded.

just took delivery of some motul chrono(not from yourselves camskill)paid full price on 6 litres the tins are rusty and dated 4/2012 whats the shelf life on this if sealed

brought the motul from yourself for years and never had the tins looking like this or the dates so far back

edited as just found this on the motul site
"Is there a shelf life on lubricants?
Motul is certified to ISO 9001. According to our quality procedure, Motul products are guaranteed for two years after their production date. To ensure the validity of this guarantee, a reference sample of each production batch is kept systematically and checked on a scheduled basis."

Hi

It should be fine, we found some that was about 5 years old and spoke to Motul. They said that officially they say two years, but as long as it's sealed, 10 years should be fine.

When we have rusty or dented cans, we put them on Ebay as damaged stock.

Cheers

The date on the can is the fill date so there should be no issue with the contents, as long as the can is still properly sealed.

Hi

The best options are the Amsoil ATF, Red Line D4 or Fuchs ATF6000, although the others are fine as cheaper alternatives.

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-771-dexron-iii.aspx

A litre should do it.

Cheers

Hi Oilman; can you tell me the precise/technical differences between these two oils.

Castrol Edge 5w-40
Castrol Magnatec 5w-40 c3

As far as I can tell:
Both are fully synthetic
Both comply with C3
Both have identical technical characteristics (viscosity index, pour point, flash points ash content etc.)
The only differences appears to be some specific manufacturer approvals (Porsche and VW ).

Cheers.

Hi Al

The Magnatec is a group III oil, the Edge is a group IV, this will explain.

Hi

A 10w-50 is ideal for your car if it's driven hard and these are the ones that we stock.

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-659-10w-50.aspx

Those are really good oils, absolute top of the range ones, so go with any brand preference you have.

A 10w-40 is a better choice for normal use

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-657-10w-40.aspx

The best ones are the Gulf Competition, Motul 300V, Redline and Millers CFS. As a cheaper alternative the Fuchs XTR, Motul 6100, Shell HX7 and Millers XSS/Trident are good choices.

Cheers

Tim do you have any written factual basis to advise that Edge is a Group IV oil. As far as I'm able to verify Castrol has refused to answer in print as to whether it is a Group III or Group IV base oil.

I accpet they will add Group IV and possibly Group V additives to get all the manufacturers approvals that Edge has.

I was also of the opinion that the latest higher quality group III oils have a similar performance to group IV oils and today the better brands of both oils are now bassically a draw on performace terms.

Unless you can provide written evidence that there is a real improvement in Group IV performance over Group III.

Mine is a 98 UK car, but running a 2.5, forged engine, with FMIC and HS TD05 230g turbo, 740cc injectors.

It does use some oil.

What would you suggest?
And do I need to use a GENUINE Subaru filter?

Thanks.

Quite a number of people including myself have had leaking Subaru blue oil filters. In my case only found out when the oil light flashed on last September.

Therefore in case there is old stock still in the system I would buy your oil filter else where.

I had a used oil analysis done on my car late 2012 and had used a stock motor factor oil filter and the report back showed no problem at all with the oil so I'm going off going to Subaru for a filters as being better than aftermarket.

Hi Eddie

I'm sure I replied to this yesterday, but it seems to have disappeared or perhaps crashed when I pressed submit.

I can't provide written evidence from oil manufacturers, they don't like to release that information and what we have received has been verbal.

I'm sure there would be an overlap in quality between the best group III and more basic group IV oils.

As for the Subaru filters, we have checked all of our stock and they don't have the affected batch numbers. I think we had one a while ago, but they were not a common problem. In fairness, I don't see an issue with the non-Subaru ones, we've sold huge amounts of those over the years without any issues.

Hi

A 10w-50 is ideal for your car.

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-659-10w-50.aspx

The Nanodrive CFS is, on paper, the best oil available, but the Pro S and CFS are both really good oils, so all are good choices for your car.

Cheers

I would use a 5w-40 in the engine.

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-656-5w-40.aspx

Out of those, the best ones are the Fuchs/Silkolene Pro S, Millers CFS/CFS NT, Motul 300V, Red Line and Gulf Competition. The Motul 8100 X-Cess, Millers XF Longlife, Fuchs GT1 XTL/Supersyn, Gulf Formula G, Shell Helix and Mobil Super 3000 are good, cheaper alternatives.

You need a 75w-90 for the gearbox and diff.

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-673-75w-...ion-fluid.aspx

If you want to go for the best, the Millers CRX 75w-90 NT, Gulf Competition, Motul Gear 300, Red Line MT90 and Millers TRX are ideal for the gearbox. The Castrol Universal, Motul Motylgear and Fuchs Gear Syn are all decent alternatives. The Fuchs Syn 5, Millers CRX, Redline 75w-90 GL5, Motul Gear 300 and Gulf Competition are ideal for the diff. The Fuchs Sintopoid, Castrol Syntrax Longlife, Millers TRX, Motul Motylgear, Mobil SHC and Amsoil FGR are also good choices.
