or just get a Forester STI - then you would have room for the kids in the boot, and a handy tonneau cover to put over them to keep the noise down.

Bit older than u might liek Chris but there's plenty of 2000-2002 Porsche Carrera 911 996's out there for that sort of money.
I've been looking at getting one and they are on paper no more expensive than a STi to run. Service costs are similiar, from independent specialists. And things like Clutches & Brakes are actually cheaper. (as were Insurance costs) And if you get a pre 2001 model then your exempt from the HUGE rise in road tax in 2010.
Have a look at these.
Porsche for sale - cars from Camtune
Portiacraft: North London Independent Porsche Specialist
Porsche Service sales - peterborough
Paragon Porsche Specialists

If you do not need the car for everyday use it opens up a whole world of options.
Boxters and Z4's are nice - friend has a Z4 3.0si, but people are not going to come upto you at petrol stations and ask you questions about it - that is not the be all and end all I know, but it is nice.
I fully accept running costs are an issue, but £25,000 gets you into
Ferrari 348
De Tomaso Mangusta
Lambo - mmmm only Jalpa / Urraco at this level.
Maserati Coupe and some classic cars.
But it does show you what is possible.
Live a bit !!
