Century 21 is quite like TK Maxx over here - loads of stock but you have to in the mood to dig hard through it all.

Century 21 is worth the effort though, some real bargains to be had in there, especially if you like your italian fashions and are not into calvin klein, abercrombie, etc which is what floats the american's boat.

Also pop into carnegie hall delhi, order a pastrami sandwich, and a strawberry cheesecake to take away. Eat sandwich in delhi, walk to central park, find a nice spot, and do the cheesecake justice!

It is opposite Ground Zero, and not far from Wall Street either. Both well worth a look.

People slag off Century 21 and dismiss it, but for me, I found more bargains in there than in Bloomingdales, Macy's etc, which were just like a US version of Debenhams and definitely did not live up to the hype. Barneys is good is you like European stuff too, but it wont be as cheap as Century 21.

For example, I picked up a CP Company coat, last seasons admittedly, for $280, also a Boss Suit, cant remember price, but it was marks and spencers money!!

Fill your boots, but also remember that New York offers so much choice and variety, dont spend all your time shopping!

Bought a pair of sunglasses from there and they were $7 - I hander over $10 bill.

The guy on the till had run out of $1 bills and there was a massive queue behind me. I said to him I would give hime an additional 2 $1 bills and he could give me a $5 bill in change.

He thought I was trying to rip him off and called for a supervisor to get change etc.

Dozy ******* in the place - but the bargains are there to be had

You have to visit New Jersey if you are a Sopranos fan and go on the Staten Island ferry, one of the most poignant moments of my life was riding the ferry late at night aged 20, warm breeze blowing the smell of the city across, the Manhattan Skyline all lit up, feeling all grown up in a big city ! we stayed in some vacant halls of residence, me, my mate Dave and two ladies on the programme, rode the Subway, truly an experience, it accelrates more quickly than you expect.

I need to go back, was only there a couple of days for a orientation for the Camp America thing.

Been there twice now, during both trips we went to:

1) Empire State Building (Day/Night).

2) Boat ride round Manhattan (can get one that stops at the statue of liberty but didn't think it was worth it as can see it all and didn't really have time).

3) Liberty helicopter ride.

4) Ground Zero.

5) Time Square (Bubba Gump Shrimp shop/restaurant worth a look if you’re a Forest Gump fan ).

6) Macy’s & Bloomingdales.

7) Central Park (go to the Zoo too).

8) Bus Tour (not bad as you get to see a few places/areas).

I'd echo some of the comments above, i.e.

Preferred Top of the Rock to the Empire State. No queues at the Rockerfeller, and 45 minute queue at the Empire State. Better views from the Rockerfeller IMHO as you have a great view of the Empire State, Chrysler Building etc and Central Park.

The queues for the Statue of Liberty were huge when we went - went on the free Staten Island ferry instead. Flippin' cold though if you stand outside. It's amazing how many people the ferries hold - we thought it would be packed, though there was loads of space.

We also did the Intrepid, paid our respects at Ground Zero, went in Donald Trump Tower, Chrysler building (can only go into the foyer), South Street Seaport, and generally walking for miles. We wanted to walk across the Brooklyn Bridge, but we didn't have the time. Also didn't get to see the UN building and also was going to have a look at Roosevelt Island, though I've no idea what's there - think there's a cable car to get there.

We stayed in Secaucus in New Jersey as the Hotels were a lot cheaper and the rooms were huge. Bus (safer than buses here) took between 30-45 minutes to get into the Port Authority Bus Terminal at 42nd and 8th, and the view of Manhattan as the bus turns down to the entrance to the Lincoln Tunnel is amazing.

We were going to see a Giants game, though the prices are very high.

We loved it there and will be going back as soon as the pennies are saved up.

I don't know if you can still do it since 9/11 but both the NYSE (Wall St.) and NASDAQ (Times Sq.) both used to run really interesting guided tours of their facilities.

The NYSE was pretty cool, we got there before trading started and then the guys come out onto the balcony and ring the bell, and all the traders start running about trading stuff. I wanted to visit the commodities exchange too but I didn't realise it was a different place and we didn't get chance.

For shopping, theres a massive place outside of NYC called Woodbury Common. Basically it's an outlet village, but it's about 10 times the size of the ones in the UK. Set in quite nice scenery too, rolling hills/mountains but only about an hour outside NYC. Most hotels run mini-bus trips there, plus you can get buses etc going there.

Have a wander around Central Park, grab some food from a Diner (pretend you are the Fonz ) - Home

Have look at Ellis Island, Statue of Liberty, Rockerfellar etc.

Personally i'd have a day with nothing planned and just get a train somewhere and see what happens - just have a random day.

A pic of the SR-71 on the Intrepid, the 9/11 tribute is also very moving. They also have a concord moored on a barge next to it. I was too youg to fly on one but this was the next best thing.

Echo what's been said about the helicopter ride. Since 9/11 they no longer fly into/over manhatten but they do fly up the Hudson and the pilot was very well informed and able to answer all questions that we asked him whilst flying. A pic of the Statue from the helicopter.

Grand central station is very impressive. It was a bit dark so the photos wern't that good when they were developed.
You can also try and spot some unushual vehicles too!

Ground zero was amazing when lit up at night.
If you are going to do the Empire State etc - Do the Empire State at night and the Rockafella Centre during the day. You can get a great picture of the Empire from the Rockafella and a better (less obstructed) view of central park.
I would have loved to go and waych one of the Nicks games (we were staying directly opposite Maddison Square Gardens) but it was over £80 each for a ticket in a seat right up in the gods.
We went during no state tax week but remember you will have to pay State tax which gets ADDED to the shelf price of what you are buying.
