Grrr, this makes me ANGRY!
I was driving through Ukraine earlier this year and got stopped and had to pay a bribe to the cops there for 'speeding' (I was barely doing 30, the 'motorway' was so badly potholed). You kind of expect that sort of stuff in poverty stricken former Soviet states - but cops fabricating lies like that in our so-called civilised country?
Makes me sick.

CallumW, you have my sympathies.
I've used fancyplates in the past to replace a knackered numberplate. I can't quite see how that would be legal in the new scheme of things. Unless I can get them to quote their postcode and the BSI or CE mark somewhere on the plate.
Though it's interesting that you can have plates made to other EEU standards, so long as they're "substantially the same" and "carry the appropriate mark or number of the standard".

Pie hole .... shut
Lots of bods out there will have private or replacement plates made for their cars. They could be subject to the same on the spot fine and lose their plate if repeated.
As far as I know this is a new thing, so it may actually help some people in the future.

The 14a information is now on the DVLA flyer on their website so no poking around in dark corners to find it now
Obviously the Police don't have the time to read the current rules that they are paid to enforce!!

im not having a go, but the above PDF is highly confusing it states that all number plates must have the following :
"The British Standard Number (currently BS AU 145d)
l The name, trade mark, or other means of identification of the manufacturer or componentsupplier. (The company who actually make the number plate.)
l The name and postcode of the supplying outlet. (The 'supplying outlet' is taken to mean acompany whose business consists wholly or partly of selling number plates.)
l A non-reflective border and the Euro-symbol with the national identification letters areoptional additions.
l There shall be no other markings or material contained on the number plate"

Certain imported vehicles may be permitted to display number plates with smaller characters if:The vehicle does not have European Community Whole Vehicle Type ApprovalAND
l The vehicle's construction/design cannot accomodate standard size number platesSpecifications for smaller sized plates (for certain imported vehicles)
Character Height
64mm
Character Width
44mm
Character Stroke
10mm
Space between characters
10mm

im not actuall sure if the fine is justified or not, because to make it confusing it says numberplates fitted on .. implying if its an old numberplate you dont have to have it, but how do they tell what date you numberplate was fitted ? i assume they mean vehicle manufacture date, but they dont actually say that
