Well evening folks....
Did the Benfleet 15 today and yep I'm in some mild pain lol
Started on the island at 10:30 this morning and I as we started (me and 464 others) wondered what we'd let ourselves in to?
5 miles past and I was doing ok.... I'd said If I finish in 2 hrs 30, I'd be pleased and I was worried I'd started too quick as I was 8 min miling....
Got to about 6 miles and we were at Benfleet Stn (I think). We ran around the back of the stn and woooooo where did that hill came from?
After that it was onto the downs and the start of the mud... It actually wasn't as bad as it could be... The most trouble I had was the feeling I needed a wee from the start.
Got to leigh Stn around 10 miles and I was starting to feel the legs getting heavy. I hung in there and once on the sea wall running back towards Canvey the wind hit like a wall for 3 miles!!!!
Along the there was lot's of encouragement from the marshals.... "come one ladies" one said.... I'm a man I replied!!!!!
Anyway, as the miles marker started to get higher I was feeling quite good....
Finished 2 hrs 8 mins.... really pleased.... 198th out of 465.

Very good
Tuesday 29th January 2008
Strapped my ankle all night and this morning.
Decided to take it really easy today and did a fast 3k on the treadmill at work.
The ankle was a little tender, but not bad at all Still going to take it easy but fingers crossed....
Worked out this is due to wearing off road shoes without enough arch support for 15 miles.....

Well the ankle is still not 100%.... went down the gym and did about 30 mins of light work and the ankle was tight and a little painful and my main fear is what will happen after 13.5 miles?
I can't risk the end goal, but I really but want to miss the race? I'm going to the gym at lunch again then 5 miles with the running club tonight.
If i'm ok with that, game on.... Book physio for Friday night so also see what she thinks?
Here's a preview of a pic from the Benfleet 15m

Well Friday night I had physio on my ankle as I could hardly walk without limping and it didn't look good for Sunday and the Half Marathon.
During the workout, Jen my physio said my ankle as full of scare tissue and muscle issues that it was some of the worse she'd seen.
The pain of having it all broke down was horrific but I knew it had to be done. I hobbled home decided to run Sunday and pull out if I had too during the race.
Well I drove this morning to Gt Bentley nr Clacton and I've never seen so many people at a race before .....
This was a Essex Championship race so everybody had turned up.... I was nervous on the start as I wasn't sure how long my leg would hold up?
Well off we went and it actually felt ok I had planned to do 9 min miles if I could as this was going to be approx. London pace. After a while I noticed I was doing 8:30's!!!!!
I got to 5 miles and I started to pass people I knew from the club.... I used this to keep me going, then started to mentally picture myself getting closer to the finish.
After about 8 miles we went over a bridge and started feel the ankle a little. Looked at the watch and I was doing 8:20's !!!!
I the running world there's a holy grail called a negative split where you do the second half of the race faster than the first.... it looked like this could be on?
Well I got to 13 miles and knew the finish had to be close.... I could now see it and sprinted the last 100m's and passed about 4 people in the process....
Finish time 1hr 49 mins..... 470th out of 817 and I could have gone faster!

Recovery day yesterday after the half marathon, so did a real easy 3 miles at lunch time.
Then the real workout!!!! Badmington with ESC!!!!!! Got a good sweat on and managed to nearly dislocate my arm!!!!!
Anyway back to today......
Did a 6 mile modded Crown run and started fine but soon flet really grim and light-headed.... I was getting dizzy and could bearly move? I just wanted to stop and walk as i felt I would fall over..... I realised that I had run out of fuel!
I was feeling really hungry this morning so just before the run I had a role. Problem was it didn't have a chance to digest and convert into energy so I ran out. I managed to get to the top of the hill where there was a drinking fountain. I stopped and had a few sips then started off again.....
Witnin a few minutes I was starting to get energy again and started to attack some hills..... the water and the roll I had earlier were finally kicking in...
I finished fine and didn't time myself today (probably a good thing!).
Think I'll rest tomorrow

15.3 miles.....
Did a route from Chelmsford to Mountnessing, Ingatstone, Stock, Hanningfield.
Got to 10 miles and my ankles and shin started aching bad!!!!!
Starting to worry that I'm pushing the miles too much and the little injuries I have are not healing.
Front of my shin is now killing me....

After Sat. off, I did a slow long run with the running club.
Started off fine and was keeping up easily.... we were on the road and the shin was behaving well.... Got to 5 miles and even though I was feeling it slightly due to lack of running in the week, all was going to plan.
Did some little sprints and the leg still held even though I was a little tired.
Got to 11 miles and I started to feel a niggle in the shin..... I thought it would be ok but after another mile or so it was getting worse....
By around 13 miles the pain was really bad but I was keeping my pace. 15 miles and I was forcing myself to run as the pain was so bad.
I did finish the run (17 miles), but the leg was it bits.....
There are 2 types of shin splints... first type hurts at the start but can be run off..... the second type (which i have), gets worse and worse and if training not reduced the leg must be operated on.
Have booked appointments today with physio and podiatrist (foot guy). Also ordered to high impact in-soles to try.....
I've already decided i will run on as i don't want to let anyone down!!!!!!!

Well yesterday decided to go to the doctors and get his opinion on the leg....
I walked in told him my leg hurt and he said "Get a good book and go to Hospital".....
So with book in hand, I went to A&E.... After about an hour I was seen by another doctor who asked what happened and pointed me in the direction of X-ray.
I was seen in about 10 minutes there and was back in the main waiting room. 2 hrs later I was called back in and they looked at the results...
No stress fracture!!! I was told it was muscular and take pain killers....
Have to admit I was impressed by the speed of the whole process... but a little dissapointed that there was no interest in the problem after no break was found.....
So good news, but the issue still exists.....
Does anyone have access to an MRI or Ultrasound machine? lol
Or is anyone a qualified Podiatrist?
So today I'm going to try and get an appointment and get some more analysis...
Oh the joys.....

Well took the day off yesterday to let the shin calm down again....
Had a physio session on it later (ouch), she said that the front of the shin was shot.... BUT I should be ok for the marathon IF I rest it now and follow the shin exercises given...
Walking is still difficult and running 26.2 miles seems impossible at the moment, but we'll see....
Bad news... withdrew from the Brentwood half marathon as It's a little too early in rehab to start pounding 13 miles..... I want to be at that distance at that time but maybe off road!
Today the training plan siad 4 miles... so did cycling for the same amount of time the run would have taken...
Shin was ok, but walking still strange.

Well the legs still not better
5 months of training and I'm going to have to start thinking about deffering if by the end of the week nothing has improved?
Saturday made a HUGE mistake!!!! I had to organise a 15 mile walk on roads wilst carrying heavy packs.....
Well I should have backed out, but as i was the organiser, I decided to do it.... What I should have done then was carried no weight but oh no.... 25 kg on the back.....
By the end the leg was shot

The lump on my shin has been busy!
That's right I now have a collection on swollen bumps on the outside of my shin.....
I'm decided that I need total rest for a week at least so after a 15 mile walk whilst carrying weight on Sat. (saw some Striders!) and finishing in bits.... decided enough is enough.
Well after 2 days rest the swelling is still there but the pain is starting to decrease... I'm going to the gym everyday but only doing upper body work (anyone know how to do cardio in a gym with no legs?)
Today I'm seeing Paul at Chelmer Foot Care
Really hard to keep focused and positive at the moment.

Well Paul at Chelmer Footcare... WOW
A really nice chap and full of information.
Said I had some of the worst inflamation he'd ever seen!!!
(Well you could have fried an egg on my shin!!!!!)
Sorted out the mechanics (temp. insoles), but will have to wait now until the inflamation goes down.
Now on day 3 of no cardio exercise and...... IT SUCKS!!!!!!!!
New physio on Friday and see what happens there? Still hurts when just walking.

Sorry for the delay in posts...
TBH, I've been feeling poo lately and haven't done any training as walking hurt too much!!!!
Anyway, had needles stuck in my leg with electric pulses put through them Friday and this made it loads better....
Sunday I managed a 2 mile fast walk and after another session Sunday I managed a sneaky 1 mile run..... YES RUN!!!!!! on the treadmill today!
Felt tight when running but nothing too bad but still isn't 100%. I have another needle session tomorrow then a 6 mile CFT (Fast walk carrying 15kg) Thursday then I'm running with for Army in a Cross Country Sunday.

FINGERS CROSSED
