Get a valeter in to give it a good and proper wash , polish and interior vallet, chances are it will come off, he gets a spotless car inside and out and do not lose the freindship of a neighbour over something pretty trivial in your eyes but serious in his.

£ 30-45 should cover it.

...but seriously though, i would clay it and then wax (twice). if that doesn't fix it, you need to get it sorted professionally - also bear in mind that your home insurance should have a public liability provision which in theory should cover this sort of event

As mentioned before, put yourself in his shoes, if someone had messed up my car and I couldn't sort it myself then i'd want them to do something about it too! Having said that, I would have at least tried to get it off before coming to see you in the first place.

Is a claybar good for this stuff then? How good is it on dead flies? My front end's covered in them!

If it was me I'd find a sexy young nubile woman with large breasts to go round in very little and a nice tight white T-shirt. I'd pay her £30 to wash the old boys car making sure she's very liberal with the soapy water.. I'm sure after a few mins he wouldn't give a **** about his bloody car!

Look mate deep down you know your in the wrong, offer to putit right - even if it does cost 100 quid - no matter how tight you are. But i reckon a wash and a polish will be 50 quid, get a few mobile valeters to come round and quote.

get it sorted and buy the guy a few beers for no hard feelings - trust me it will benefit you in the long run.

b) have you inspected it yourself?

two things to determine if the old duffer is trying it on.

i can t see how its your fault though...

is it any different to using your washing up liquid squirters in front of a newly valeted ferrari?

unless you were sanding down "nitromors" impreganted paint, i cant honestly see this attcking the car paint... to be honest.

or just get him a bag of Worther's Originals.

Didn't you say he wants to get it polished-not resprayed.

It is down to you to ensure that what you do does not cause problems to anyone else surely.

If he's a bit of a polishing freak, chances are his car was covered in all sorts of hyper polish. Would this have softened ( I assume you sanded the doors outside on a sunny day ) and let the flakes embed/adhere into it?

I'm perfectly responsible thank-you very much. As it happens i went round to speak to him this morning. I asked if there was anything i could do and offered to spend some time cleaning it. He says no he wants the job doing properly. Its got to be professionally polished. I said surely paint flakes should just wash off. Now he claims its actually paint. I sanded them down outside,and painted all but one in the house. One i painted in the garage with the door open, but full gloss paint doesn't travel 20 metres through the air when you're painting a door laid flat at waist height. He claims its paint when i know damm well it isn't. Who's the one being unreasonable.

Going by your original description it seems difficult to believe that sanded down paint grains could stick permanently to his car. Have you looked at the car closely in order to see whether it really was your fault that his car paint is damaged and does it look to you that it cant be removed just by washing it?

If it is your paint and it can't be removed except by polishing then surely you are responsible for putting it right as it was before. I find it hard to believe that sanded paint grains won't just wash off. If he will not accept you washing it off in such a way that you do not damage his car then he is being unreasonable. But if you damage the paint by washing it then you are still on the back foot!

I offered to help sort it.He refused my help.Now he calls me a liar and says its actual paint,not paint dust/flakes.Sort it yourself then.

and here it begins, the road to neighbouring hell, if it was water based, then the dust particles, if in contact with moisture, can become 'wet' paint, although it will come off without paint damage, but will prob require claying ....you have 2 directions now, the 'bite your tongue and pay' direction which means relatively happy neighbours, or the '**** you and your car' direction which will eventually make you wish you just payed up in the first place.

I know its an accident etc but if he took civil legal action he would prob win as I know you thought you were far enough away but it would be classed as reckless on your part for not taking further precautions ie putting some sheeting up to stop the flakes blowing over etc.
It is very bad look and personally I would go straight round and give his car the full works with claybar etc and if that works give it a full wax. Cant see the flakes damaging the paintwork to the extent of a respray tho.

It may be different in England, however in Scotland, the title deeds often prohibit certain action and state what the gardens can and cant be used for.

Regarding the wind, I am the same - we are all particular about our cars and I would expect my neighbour to sort that.
