Gotta say I think the Audi is a cool car and suggesting that it's poor that an M3 CSL which costs less could beat it seems pointless. Going down that route you could say the same thing about the M6 and M5 and a whole load of other cars. What about the Ariel Atom at £30k...that would spank most cars in outright speed and handling.

When it comes down to it Audi have made a great car, however it may not be your cup of tea in which case there are loads of other great cars on the market for similar money, or even less.

Next post about Audi's should be one without petty arguments based on facts that usually can't be substantiated!

LOTR/AL started this thread wanting to know of the two very different cars, which was faster. I've posted that M3 CSL was faster around Nordschleife and unlike LOTR/AL, backed with evidence.

mate how often do I need to tell you. Walter Rohlr (sp) took the R8 round the ring faster than the M3 CSL has gone.

However seeing as it was the sportauto driver who set the M3 CSL fastest recorded lap round the ring, im saying that we should wait for their next issue when they take the R8 round to make it a fair comparison.

What was the lap time, when was it timed and where is the proof. Unless we see it, then the M3 CSL still stands.

And yet you expect us to be impressed by a comparison between a CSL which is, in all reality, a well developed 4/5 seat repmobile which in 1.8 guise sells for around say £23,000 with a (as you will tell it) purpose built brand new all aluminium mid engined "supercar" which normally sells for around £80,000.

And if anyone gives me an infraction for that, there really is no justice in the world.

To be honest, if I was Audi, I'd be more concerned that the standard Gallardo is, what, a couple of seconds a lap faster round Hockenheim than the new R8.

Agreed Lets wait for the R8 to come with the V10 engine from the Gallardo (as it will next year I think) and we can start this thread again

Always been a fan of Audi in terms or design and build quality, but up until recently (older RS model aside), they have been well - a bit boring and dull. They have definetly bucked their ideas up in recent years. The new RS4 is a stonking car, as is by all accounts, the new TT.

I'm a huge Porsche fan too, but I'm not blind to the fact that Audi has really moved the game on for luxury performance cars with the R8. That's a good thing, as it should encourage the likes of Porsche / BMW etc to come up with something even better.

Competition keeps the market healthy. I'd love to see Porsche come back with an all new car to challenge the R8.

Audi R8-S will be getting the next gen RS6 engine so expect 580hp from a 5.2 V10 BI-TURBO engine

No I do have evidence without a substantial source.

However look at the 997turbo times, and the RS4 times.The R8 has beaten the the 997 Turbo a few times now and when it hasnt it wasnt very far off. that alone should suggest to you, a person who wont believe me when i tell you what cars faster, that the r8 is indeed superior.
