I'd put money on a Ford Transit Connect or a knackered old Volvo S40.

thats starting a slipperly slope of changing bits from the cars....

It's got to be standard vs. standard? If the BMW comes with better rubber then that's that? surely.

I'm not a big fan of the boggo M3 but the CSL is a different matter.

be interesting to see how quick the new V8 M3 and if they make a CSL - now surely that will give the R8 something to think about.

the thing is they are totally different cars - the R8 is basically a GT built from the ground up - where as an M3 CSL is a (or started as) family saloon.

Plus isn't an R8 80K plus - why dont you compare it to a GT3 or a 997 Turbo.

just a thought

If it is the R8 then it better be A LOT faster to be even remotely impressive or interesting. Considering you are comparing it to a car that is restricted to 155mph, 4 years old, has the engine mounted at the front and was £20k cheaper.

I don't actually think anyone apart from you actually cares if the R8 is faster.

What would be more interesting is to see how many people would click the 'Don't give a toss' option if you were to add it.

Well LotR - I reckon a Perodua Kelisa, driven by pretty much any SN member, would be quicker than an R8 driven by you.

If you are refering to Nordschleife lap times, then the R8 laps it at 7m:55S according to the article below, 5 seconds slower than the M3 CSL.

2008 Audi R8 - First Look and Road Test - Motor Trend

According to R8 forum, that time was achived by 7 times Le Mans winner Tom Kristensen on the optional Pirelli Corsa tyres. (Michelin Cup equivilent)

Motor Trend R8 drive impression - Audi R8 Forum

The R8 however does have a higher top speed since the M3 CSL is limited to 155mph.

Doesn't bode well for the R8 that you are comparing a 4+ year old car, based on a family saloon - hence 4 seats and the engine up front with the quickest and most advanced offering from Audi... which costs about 2-3 times more to buy (and c.£20k when the CSL was new).

There are cases where the BMW came with 2 sets of alloys, on with the cup tyres and one with the all weather. The Audi R8 can be had with the cup tires also if so desired.

Anyway as you know me I wouldnt have made this thread if I didnt already know the answer.

The R8 is indeed faster, around the 'ring, hockenheim and some american racetrack. Infact the R8 is also faster than the 997 Turbo around two of those tracks.

Audi R8 vs. Corvette Z06, Dodge Viper, Porsche 911 Turbo: Supercar Comparison Test

Laptimes and comments:
Viper SRT10:1:15.99
As the miles passed, the Viper's true calling became clear: This beast is a better weekend toy than an everyday supercar.

997TT :1:17.17
The Turbo may well be the quickest, most practical supercar in the world. At $122,900 and up, it’s also one of the most expensive.

Z06 :1:15.74
But when you consider the price, performance and practicality of the Z06, it truly is America’s everyday supercar.

R8 :1:15.69

Still, even factoring in the Audi’s six-figure price tag, this was the one car we all wanted in our own garages. The Audi R8 may be the new supercar benchmark.

Score another win for the impressive R8. This can't make VW's minority owner happy with the way the R8 keeps beating various versions of the 911 in comparison tests.

1st Place
Audi R8 - 220 Points
Base Price - $109,720
Tested Price - $120,970
0-60 - 4.3
0-100 - 10.7
1/4 Mile 12.8 @ 112 mph
5-60 - 4.8
70-0 - 160 feet
300 ft skidpad - .97
Willow Springs International Raceway Lap Time - 1:35.76/94.0 mph
Lane change (mph) - 66.7
Observed miles per gallon - 14

Highs
Ballet-dancer balance and grace, eager responses, telepathic steering, internal combustion rarely sounds better.

Lows
Proportions awkward from some angles, uncomfortable dead-pedal height, blind in the rear quarters.

Verdict
Sports-car perfection from an unexpected source.

2nd Place
Porsche 911 Turbo - 210 Points
Base Price - $123,760
Tested Price - $141,510
0-60 - 3.8
0-100 - 9.2
1/4 Mile 12.2 @ 117 mph
5-60 - 4.8
70-0 - 159 feet
300 ft skidpad - .98
Willow Springs International Raceway Lap Time - 1:38.53/91.3 mph
Lane change (mph) - 65.0
Observed miles per gallon - 14

Highs
Omigawd thrust, never-fade brakes, limpet grip, gorgeous interior treatment, maximum Porsche mystique.

Lows
Spooky at the limits of adhesion, high interior noise levels, Prussian ride quality, snoot scrapes on driveway ramps.

Verdict
For 911 addicts who have no wish to be cured, Porsche Sturm und Drang just doesn't get any better than this.

3rd Place
Aston Martin V8 Vantage - 191 Points
Base Price - $117,150
Tested Price - $129,110
0-60 - 5.1
0-100 - 12.3
1/4 Mile 13.5 @ 106 mph
5-60 - 5.8
70-0 - 165 feet
300 ft skidpad - .93
Willow Springs International Raceway Lap Time - 1:40.73/89.4 mph
Lane change (mph) - 64.1
Observed miles per gallon - 13

Highs
Appealingly edgy update on classic GT-coupe shape, smooth operator on rough payment, irresistible V8 growl.

Lows
A bit too much body roll, nervous under hard braking, short on muscle among these heavy lifters.

Verdict
A stylish GT sophisticate that's a little out of its depth among these thoroughbreds.

But going by most of your past posts your numerous quotes of "the benchmark" 'ring times, and this thread IS about R8 and M3 CSL, its still SLOWER around Nordschleife than the M3 CSL.
