Our tax burden (which includes all the indirect taxes) is actually HIGHER than Germanys. Isolating the case of income tax deliberately misleads as to the true extent of taxation. Take for example Browns "I will not raise income tax" promise. He raises National Insurance instead. Your claim is in the same vein, factually correct but totally misrepresentative

It is far cheaper to live in Germany than the UK.

There was an article recently in the Canadian press about immigrants to Canada.
Amongst highly qualified immigrants (graduates etc), 50% of them return to their home country within a year due to difficulty securing work related to their qualifications in Canada. Also, many qualifications will gain you entry to Canada (such as accountancy quals), but are not recognised in Canada when it comes to getting a job. An accountant will have to sit all Canadian accountancy exams, for example.
As I've discussed many times on SN, I emigrated to Toronto in 2003, but returned to the UK in 2005. There are many reasons, but the main ones were due to the way you get new jobs.
75% of jobs in Canada are never advertised because they have a culture of hiring someone they know, however tenuous the connection.
I would also warn people contemplating emigrating abroad because of disallusionment with the UK that they are potentially heading for disappointment. The country you move to may not have the issues causing you to want to leave the UK, but I guarantee there will be other things in the new country that will be just as annoying, they'll just be different.
The cliche "the grass is not always greener" is often very pertinent if you are leaving the UK for the wrong reasons.

But I agree - the grass always seems to be greener.
And wherever you live it will have a few downsides.
Its a question of being cautious and finding out what they are.

Markus: I agree that Toronto is one fine place to live, having family thereabouts and visited the area frequently. BUT, I love my England and nothing would budge me from her shores. Maybe it is all about where in the UK people live? I for one live in Lincolnshire and love it here. Due to outside influences, I have live in the Northwest, South Herts and now Lincs. So I've had the opportunity to experience a reasonable cross section of the UK.
There will always be a downside to wherever people choose to live, it's natural . But to slag a place off like some are doing on here and leave with that attitude in place is pretty naff really.
Let's raise this thread in say 10 years.... and count how many escapees returned!.
