Carrera 4
I agree with 911boy.
I love my scoobs but when I went for a run in a 996 convertible with a colleague and it was just
.
The engine had a nice rumble to it and I remarked on how it was quite similiar to the scoob noise, Then he opened it up and it just transformed into a glorious howl.
That shut me up...
Brakes Awesome.
As are the looks
Loverly car and I would have one tommorrow if I could afford one.

911Boy,
Impreza STi 5 Type R
0-60 4.3 seconds
0-100 9.8 seconds
She is great fun to drive, but I do like the C4. Beautiful car and I'm told its a hell of a drive
. Only managed to drive the new C2, Box and Box S.... so far.

Its all pluses and minuses!
My mate's lost more on his car in 14 months than my car COST new!
Yes, my girlfriend would rather i drove a ragtop Porker and would happily have an affair with any man that has one..!
Long drive? Motorways etc. Porker every time.
Fun and performance - Give me a Type R or RA any day. Drove a 996 C4 and thought it was dull as dishwater.
Prestidge and all that Bullsh1t - No contest,. the porsche wins hands down.
But... the original point was what's quicker.
Scoob One - Porker Ill.

0-60/0-100 mph times are that useful when the cars are moving!
I'm sure the owner of the C4 that over took me found out when I reeled him in and pushed him out of the way!!
I was feathering my brakes at points as he couldn't out accelerate me!
Sure they are powerful cars, but I think he was annoyed when he saw a standard looking Impreza overtake him!
I guess he felt better when I did the same to the Ferrari 360 in front of him!!

Before I get the old 'no Impreza can do that'
I have to say that my turbo reaches full spool at 4,000rpm, which equates to 100mph on the speedo when in fifth and with a rev limiter set at 7500rpm, it makes it an interesting car to drive!!
- Factual point rather than an admitting I was speeding!

andy,
I appreciate that the Impreza is quick, but I find it amazing how many stories there are of people with them 'blowing away' cars which, admitadley on paper, should eat them for breakfast. If you look at the stats available, and in my personal experience, a 911 (996) carrera 4 would beat a standard Impreza every time, provided we have equal driver skill etc. I don't doubt that with a less skilled driver at the wheel anything could happen. I mean I would'nt fancy a race with a top F1 or rally driver in my c4 even if they only had a golf GTI or something similar

911 boy, BHP isn't everything, torque, power delivery and most weight are equally if not more important.
Admittedly, I have a P1 and I have recorded 0-60 and 0-100 times of 4.66 and 10.98 at Bruntingthorpe, which are pretty similar to any 996's but these times for both cars would have been recorded with very little mechanical sympathy ( certainly in my case!) and therefore bear no resemblance to real life driving.
At the same day at Brunters (on the excellent driving course with Don Palmer) there were 2 other "pupils", my mate with a 5 litre TVR and "Dave" with a trick 993 turbo 4 S (450bhp/430 ftlb) full of carbon fibre and other bits of trickery. Down the 2 mile straight there was about 1 car's lenght in it to 60, about 2-3 by 100mph after which he sodded off - my car went off the speedo (165mph+)but wouldn't go any faster whereas when he started braking he was doing 180-185 and still climbing. However on the "short"(2 mile) circuit, he was 1 second a lap slower than the P1 due mainly to him having to brake far earlier due to the weight of the thing. On the long circuit I wouldn't have seen which way he went. Dave let me drive his car around the circuit, superb, but a very different beast to the scooby.
The point of this long burble is stats don't tell the full story - these are very different cars, built with different purposes in mind. In speed terms there is little to choose between a 996 and a scooby (and nothing if compared to an STi/P1) but that is about 15% of what makes a car in my book. If I had the money I would have both, and would use them very differently as people above have said.
Having been terribly rational about all this I'm now going to stick my tongue out , tell you my *****'s bigger than yours and invite you to a track day sometime soon - it'll open your eyes. Just ask the brave chap who turned up at the recent SIDC day at Donington Park in his 993 C2 and spent the day being overtaken by scoobies. He was very surprised as he thought that he would have one of the faster cars there.

Taken an 911 Carrera around a track.
Always quite liked the look of them but it was a sheer joy to drive (even with the loose gearchages). It was quite old (15 years or so). Have been told the old ones feel a much more involving drive than the newer ones.
It impressed me no end and I'd rather have one than a jap machine now. It just felt more like a car that was alive in your hands. It had bags of character, however even the old ones are quite pricey (and that would be what I would look for) so maybe I'll have to wait a while. I would expect a 911 turbo to wee over a scooby unless it was wet twisties.
I gave it maximum stick and it was ponging of burning oil after a few laps however!!! but hey, you can't have everything
edited to add: when I say scooby I'm talking UK spec.

996 C4 is a real nice car but i would rather have a P1 anyday.
(Maybe thats because im under 50 though!
)
More individual, rarer and surely just as quick.
Is the Porsche so good that it is worth twice what a P1 is?
I don't think so.
A lot of the money you pay is so you can say, "I have a Porcshe".
If i had the money to consider a 996 C4 i would pop across to
a TVR dealer and get a Tuscan S.
Which would definatly whip the *** off the Porsche.
All in my opinion of course!
Cheers, Kos.
PS Pretty good thread this

A 911 is harder to drive fast (round the corners) than a scoob, but in the right hands they are bloody quick. Consider that a 9 year old 964RS (awesome car btw, get a ride in one, makes an STi or Evo VI seem dull IMO) with 260bhp and standard road tyres can do a full lap of the Nurburgring in 8'13, faster than a F355. The same driver (Sport Auto tester) did 8'39 in a scoob, for comparison.
A scoob is easy to drive to 85% of its capabilities, whereas IMO a lot of porker drivers get intimidated by the rear-engine layout & hedge stories, or are just buying it for status, and not enthusiast drivers. I'm sure we've all heard about some good driver in a hot hatch blowing away normal scoobs on track etc, doesn't make it the faster car.
