Thanks, Chip. No-one's made any comments on the contents of my w*rkshop windowsill, yet.

So we have various wood treatment, an astray full of screws, some nail varnish, some of LF's watercolour paint, and a hose attachment off a Dyson.

Do I win £5?

You missed the box of PFR6B sparkplugs and the 1:72 scale Subaru Rally Car.

what do you do for a living bubba?

only asking as the gouges and mallet in the pic aren't what your normal DIYer has knocking around in the shed and the mallet looks like it's seen some action

I'm a joiner at the moment, hence the Marples carving gouges rather than Rolson or somesuch crap. The mallet was my old man's so I can't take any credit for the wear and tear. It's too light to be of any use until the late stages of carving. I need a couple of serious gouges that can be hit with a hammer.

Using power tools now eh? Isn't that cheating?

BTW if you want a proper wood carving mallet I have one for sale. It's a real 'king of mallets' that was bought from the finest sculpture tool supplier in London - Alec Tiranti. It's had very little light (female) use only.

Tiranti's Sculptors' Tools

Let me know if you would be interested, otherwise I'll sell it to a real sculptor.

there's normally quite a bit of good gear on ebay, tradesmen coming to retirement and selling up etc.

pretty hard going oak, could be a bit of a lengthy project

are you planing on hollowing out the mouth and having a row of teeth either side or will this be a one sided detail sort of thing?

Of course it's not cheating. Would you expect me to have felled the oak with an axe and slabbed it with a two-man saw? I'm an artist, anyroad. Joe Davis made a 100 break with an umbrella, once.

As I mentioned earlier in the thread, I'm not sure the block is thick enough to do true 3D. Added to the fact that it may not be thoroughly seasoned, carving individual teeth in the round might be a bit awkward. I'll play it by ear.

Wink

I might even use the Makita detail sander at some point.

Unclebuck, that Tiranti mallet apparently used to be Lignum Vitae. What is it now, please? Has it been alchemically transmuted?

Undercutting the teeth is the main challenge. It would be *such* a shame if you cocked that up.

You need a decent mallet for that task.

It's what superglue was made for.

Go on - how much do you want for it? You could sponsor me you know. I'm not very well off.

It is 100% Lignum Vitae. A top quality item (about 25 years old). It's lived in a dry cupboard for most of that time. I'll get a pic tomorrow if you like.

What size/weight is it? Obviously it would need to be the 4", given the materials I w*rk with.

Have you ever carved Ekki wood?

Impossible material.

Just measured it. It's 6" diameter (told you it was the king of mallets )

Bigger than any Tiranti now list for sale on their website IIRC. That should give an indication of it's potential value....

Stop trying to build up the value before negotiation. It's essentially a weight which is swung to knock lumps off of a big chunk of tree-wood. It's not going to affect the artistic outcome of the piece in any way.

I think I'll just get some nylon-handled gouges and use a 2lb lump hammer.

Sounds like it's too good for the likes of you.

I'll sell it to someone who can appreciate then....

Let's not forget the 'king of all tools' - mooosis A swift blow from a 6" dia lump of LV could maybe knock some sense into even him

Not today... too much staircase w*rk at W*rk and the new guitarist came round to rehearse some stuff tonight. Perhaps at the weekend.

Hammy called the project "Jurassic Bark".
