Do you think it looks better or worse without the texture from the gouges?

 

Looking great - IMHO it looks less like work in progress without the gouges but I think a bit of oil will work wonders when it's finished

A bit difficult to say, i'm so used to the photo's you've already taken inside, it certainly looks better in daylight, and as its a skull it's supposed to be fairly smooth anyway, so my vote goes for smooth.

Well, fartwipe (one insult deserves another) Speaking as probably the only person on here with a bonafide degree in sculpture, it is my considered opinion that you should be concentrating on the overall 3D form rather than dicking around with surface decoration. Or is it finished already?

 

I'm not decorating the surface, I'm smoothing it out - for two reasons;

1. I can't decide how I want to finish it so I'm trying out the smooth finish.

2. It's difficult to see whether the form is correct when the texture of the gouged surface is so overpowering to the eye.

As it happens, the form of the skull is quite close to where it needs to be. Lots more w*rk needs doing on the orbit and other skull openings, as does the mouth area. The sculpture isn't going to be fully 3D - it's a half skull, up to the centreline.
