I've done some carving and smoothing with the electric file today:

 

 

How long to do you see it taking until complete Bubba?

 

It really depends on whether I can leave it alone, or not. I'm nowhere near finishing at this point - the whole of the flesh side needs covering in scales, in fact, the teeth need perfecting, and upper and lower jaws aren't even the right width and thickness with respect to each other yet. I can't see it being any sooner than March or April.

 

That is dedication to the max mate,do you find yourself getting worked up with it and feel like chucking the towel on the project on times?

 

I felt like I was struggling a couple of days ago as I was convinced I'd made a fundamental mistake that I couldn't put right, which, after all the work I'd already put in, felt like a real kick in the bollocks. I really felt gutted but persevered and came out the other side feeling even more positive.

I feel like I could spend every available hour in the shed at the moment, I'm so fired up.

 

I like your way of thinking Bubba,feels good when that happens though and really does fuel the fire within to push forward on your task in hand.
You must be fired to still be posting on here at 2 in the morning[before you say it I know I am as well ]

 

It's taking an extreme act of will to stop myself from going outside and carving till four in the morning.

 

First update for a couple of days - I'm pretty pleased with the way it's going, now.

Very polished, that's the electric file I suppose,don't think iv ever seen one.

What will you preserve him with once he's completed?

 

This is the one I've got, which was about £40.00. I wanted the Makita one at £160.00 but couldn't justify it!


Smoothing's only the first stage on the flesh side, though -there's tons of skin detail to do.

I'll probably use cellulose sealer and wax to finish it, as oil darkens the wood too much.

Perhaps I ought to just chew the wood, or pick at it with my fingernails.

It's a strip of moving sandpaper, not a CNC routing machine.

Me too. Seen the thread floating around for ages, decided to click last page....and whoah! You've some skills fella.

 

I've just noticed that this thread has passed the 20,000 views milestone. I'd like to thank me mam, me dad (rip), my loving family and the two big chunks of wood that have made this thread what it is today - constantly irritating when it gets bumped to the top every couple of days.
