Same to you, COB. I'm very much a normal bloke, actually. I just have the tendency to let my horrible, irritated side boil over onto internet forums, which gives me a bad reputation to live up to.

Common ground. I consider our 'disagreements' a thing of the past. Best of luck with this/future pieces and I wish you & yours a happy new year
Oh no!! lol - me old Nemesis! My brother was asking me what he could get me for Christmas, and your mallet was at the back of my mind I think.
I'm sort of embarrassed about the vids because I think I look a bit like a frightened rabbit in 'em. But thanks for the good comments.
Thought you came over as quite professional mate. Better than some i`ve seen ont `elly As your so good at the teeth maybe you should take up dentistry, you`d get paid a lot more
I'm a technician, in education - but I have been a joiner for quite a few years.
Well you certainly have a dedication to your passion and hobby, I suppose spending the amount of time you have on the carving so far you don't get out much

I'm annoyed that I have to go back to work tomorrow. If I could, I'd spend eight hours a day on this project, no problem. I'm just so chilled and engrossed while I'm doing it.
Just a regular update. The only real notable thing is that I've started to carve right through the mouth and I've been treating the teeth with thinned shellac - it's a tip i've picked up off the net which is supposed to stabilise short/ difficult grain. It really works and I'm most impressed.
It is very impressive I must say, and without doubt takes a lot of skill
May I ask - what's with the cracks and can you not do anything with them?
It's called checking, and it's a pitfall of using recently-felled wood that hasn't dried out or been properly seasoned. The wet, soft, outer sapwood loses its moisture quickly and shrinks, while the drier, harder heartwood loses it more slowly and shrinks less. I hope to carve out most of the heartwood, which might help the checking to close up over the next year or so. I will use cabinet makers' filling wax to fill any remaining checks.
It's the relative positions of the nostril and antorbital fenestra which are wrong. Plus, two deep holes have appeared - not very big, but quite obvious.
