Hillclimbing, the 2007 Season Project.
Santa Pavlo has been busy so he tells me.
Happy christmas all.
Rob sent you pm.
How about getting a new thread going 2008 season?
And Graham should be thinking about the same...2009 season.
Need something to read!
Hope all have had a good Christmas break.
Bought myself a Christmas present, wifes gonna kill me!

Nice present, buy her something to divert her attention from it, thats my trick.
CLEAN THAT ENGINE BAY!
I'm sure the Zen engine will puurrrrr really well!
So, you will have a 2.2 litre or is that a 2.2 litter!!
You will all miss me next year....
Got to go, the men in white coats are at the door.

Had a go at making the shell good where I had removed the sound proofing, my Dad and Pete brought over some steel wheels for the battery drills which just blasted it off and left the shell prepped and ready for some paint in no time. Pete put a coat of hammerite smooth over and it looks great with just 1 pass even if all the fumes nearly killed us all.
I have a good idea on how I want the car to be and when my dash returns from being flocked I can really start to move towards a finish before it goes off to Zen.
John Murphy (Blademaster)called by to see the progress and we did a bit of part wheeling and dealing. I also got to see his impreza graveyard which is an impressive arrangement indeed.

The men in white coats won't catch you if you get that MR2 engine in the smart!
Smoothrite is fab stuff and covers so well plus in the cool temperatures flats to a great shine indeed.
Worries me he has a grave yard of Impreza's!
Looking and sounding good Rob.
Remember stickers on the car will add weight

1000kgs in a 4 door with a cage, I can't see it happening personally, not without spending mega bucks anyway. So far my weight saving programme has cost me £0, so I will be happy with sub 1100kgs for £0 spent.
Happy new year to you to mate, and everyone on here!

1050 is acheivable on a modest budget.

Have you weighed your doors as stock and when 'hollowed' out Rob?
iirc David Wallis did the same mod and was dissapointed at the saving, but a saving it was.
Glass to Plexi will take 20 of that 'missing' 50Kg, wheel well as Tim says.
Change the cage?
1000Kg x 450 bhp = 450/tonne
1050Kg x 450 bhp = 428/tonne
Plexi + cage = £2000? = bigger MD turbo = 500 bhp
Weight loss costs a fortune in the end, but there is a good place to stop?

I am sitting on 1130 kilos with the rollcage, if I have weighed everything correctly as it came off the car. started at 1315 kilos with half tank fuel.
Have not cut anything out, but could probably get to 1080 if change the glass for lexan and go for the lightweight doors.
Very expensive though to do for 40 odd kilos - can spend on many other items which would provide better performance.

When Roy had to fit a cage to the Evo, he went through similar pains. His biggest saving was a carbon fibre propshaft.
Also, I have cut out wheel wells and rear bulkheads in other cars. Sad thing was fitting alloy panels and braces needed to keep the shell stiff lost alot of the weight savings.
If you have fuel in the boot, you have to have a fire wall between the fuel and you. Also a tank in the wheel well brings the centre of gravity down, so does plastic windows.
'Low centre of gravity' makes for better cornering.
'Low polar moment' makes for faster cornering.
keep the front and rear ends light and the weight between the wheelbase. Sit further back in the car to counter balance the engine weight. Sit as far inboard as possible, get the battery or anything heavy that is sealed from spillages in the passenger footwell to counter balance you.
I thing you can loads more yet, when you think about it.
Graham: Impreza graveyard was Rob's term, I call it working progress!
Secondly, my best advice for making my car faster came from a pal who ran Honda touring car team. Go on a diet......its cheaper. SO I WILL!

Isn't the standard tank lower than having a tank in the wheel well? I have stayed with the standard tank as I thought this would provide a lower centre of gravity being underneath the car than in the boot.

I put the car on my local weigh bridge in august which was the same spec as I ran weight wise all season, the only differnces in weight from a standard RA were -
6 point CDS cage in
All oem seats and rails out replaced with 1 kevlar bucket on alloy side mounts.
All seat belts removed replaced with 1 lightweight 6 point harness.
OEM battery replaced with Varley red top racing battery.
And that was about it, all carpet trims, soundproofing, door cards etc. were still in and that weighed 1170kgs with 1/2 a tank of fuel.

With everything I have since stripped out coming in about 55/60 kgs so far I'm confident when I replace the OEM tank with this

and a few other bits of work I can make it under the 1100kgs for £0 (I was given the tank).
We shall see, as I have found too often during the strip out what you think is 10 kilos is more like 3 when you get it on the scales.
GRP doors and plexi glass are the big save but buying them, getting them painted up, latches hinges fitting etc. it becomes very expensive so not an option at the moment maybe one for next winter.
Graham - I haven't got my 'trial' door back from my friend yet so not sure what savings that will realise, will post up when I know.

I have a set of gaff doors off a Sport in the garden. The plan was to weight, hollow out and weight again. Remember you will need door bars doing this if you leave the cards off so the scrute can see inside. That adds weight back in!
If I were doing this I would fit a small tank in the stock location having removed the stock tank. All the pipes are in place, electrics too and the mass is as low as you can go. Pity it is on the drivers side!
John's comments on driver location is a good one, driver mass of 50 Kg in Rob's case and a lot more in mine moved back 100mm or more will certainly help esp if you sit on the PMofI (possible?)
Didn't know Roy had a carbon prop! Those are serious money. Save 7Kg for £1200?

I would rather have a steel roof if I fell off and over!
Why bother with a dash board at all if you are both chasing the ultimate flyweight? The only gauges you need are Tacho and water temperature, maybe not even water.
I just can't get ready to throw everything out and send the car on a one-way ticket to a race track.
you are both more committed to the sport than me!
Did you start with 1400Kg Pete?

It is all part of my bigger plan along with the grp doors, plexi glass etc., it's all money though and unfortunately not many money trees around here so it will have to wait.
Bigger fish to fry at the moment though like getting an engine back in.

You just need to set your budget for the year, stick to it and make your pennies go as far as possible, get the best £'s for seconds ratio you possibly can and drive the **** out of it and see what happens.
The new BMW has a carbon roof which is great, it also has a dry kerb weight of 1670 kilos which is not. Why are modern performance cars so heavy?

My first plan is to save for the conversion of the near worthless Sti for 2009 and see how you all fare in 2008 with these roached-out cars.
Being able to drive them at the very fast speeds/times is indeed another matter, and my advancing age does not exactly help!
That flocked dash will look wicked and will hide the cr@ppy wires till you cut it all out.
2.5/MD/ppg (6 speed?) and good brakes with 1100Kg will frighten me enough, but still leave me in 4th spot!
Plan B is to save/sell and build a Ginetta G12 which Trish favours (I'm on a winner!)
Only a £22K ticket Rob...
Everything seems to end up as a £20K ticket!
